thyroid not working

Hi I am a 24yr old female and earlier this year my blood tests came back that I had thyroid problems. Been taking medication but now my next lots of blood test had come back and dr said my thyroid is no longer working. I don't completely understand everything he was saying as drs have their own words which I never heard of in my life. Hes up my dose to 50mg but is it a worry if it has suddendly stopped working? My neck on 1 side is to stiff to move but mainly occurs when I wake up but I know its not how I slept. Could you tell me if I would have to go under surgery at such a young age.
Thankyou

Do you still feel a pain on one side of the neck, because so do I. I have an underactive thyroid too.
how are you getting on now

I take it that you have hypothyroidism. This is where the gland becomes underactive, most commonly due to antibodies that have developed against the thyroid. When your doctor says that it has stopped working that it is no longer able to produce thyroxine on its own because the antibodies have damaged its cells. This is what happens in hypothyroidism of this nature. Don't worry, the medication is replacing the thyroxine that your thyroid no longer produces. You also shouln't have to worry about surgery unless you have a goitre (this is like a lump in the neck). I know its difficult to take all this stuff in when you have have recently been diagnosed, i felt the same. How are you feeling?
