my mums got over active thyroids and she has only got one side of her neck swollen what could this be and could it be cancer ?

Can't say if its cancer, she needs to have doctor check it out.  If doctor thinks  other test are warranted to rule out cancer, doctor will order them.

It could simply be a swollen/enlarged thyroid that will correct itself when she is treated and/or on thyroid medication.
