thyroiditis and yaz?

I have hashimoto's and take synthroid for that, but over the past 3 months I've developed a painful goiter. All blood tests, ultrasounds, etc show that I have a normal thyroid function, but I also take Yaz, and started it about 4 months ago. I've heard that b.c. pills can effect thyroid function...does anyone know if oral contraceptives can cause a goiter or if in particular Yaz or Yasmin can do that?

The temporary relief I was referring to with the Ibuprofen is just PAIN relief - I just wanted to clarify even though you would've probably worked that out!

Hey baghera07

NOOOO!! No - oral contraceptives have NO link with goitre growth.

The interaction that you have heard of between b.c. pills and thyroid function is on a cellular level.
Birth control pills (or any additional estrogen like in HRT for menopause) may increase the serum TBG concentration AKA bound thyroid hormone (TBG is a transport protein found in the serum part of your blood)  which subsequently decreases the free thyroid hormone available for your cells to use.  So when you commence b.c pills for the first time you may require slight adjustment in your synthroid dose in the coming months.  After the adjustment period if doses remain the same then no further action is required.

I take Yasmin too - probably for the last 4 years but was on other b.c. before that.  For me, its the one that keeps my moods the most even from months to month.  Less PMS and lighter bleeding.  Woo hoo!!  I guess it just depends what works best for you.

I take my thyroxine first thing AM and my Yasmin last thing PM.  How about you?

Sounds like your goitre might be growing more quickly than expected.  I'm sorry about that.  It's no fun is it - I sympathise.  Can you look back on photo's and notice any difference from any particular time?

The pain has been said to be associated with inflammatory activity which we know in your case is caused by the Hashimoto's - which is also likely to be responsible for your goitre.  Some people have found some temporary relief from NSAID analgesics such as ibuprofen.  Anything's worth a try - but use caution if you are asthmatic as NSAID's can irritate asthma but not always.
