Your baby has a high t4 level and normal TSH. We cannot diagnose as we are not doctors! I would retest at the second newborn screening ( usually done at 2 or 3 weeks of age) and see if the t4 comes down into normal range. Who really knows how big a fontonal or "soft spot " is suppose to be??? I know I don't and I've had three babies. I'm sure the doctors do though! Does your baby have any other symptoms of thyroid issues? My daughter was born without a thyroid gland in 2000. Her condition is called Congenital Hypothyroidism. She had a high TSH ( a signal from the pituitary gland that more thyroid hormone was needed in her brain/body) Her T4 was lower in the normal range, however it would/ should have been non exsistent, as there was actually no gland in her body to make any t4 or t3 ( the actual thyroid hormones) However, babies are born with some of the mothers thyroid hormone in them and I was also nursing. Your babies high level of t4 could be due to this. If there is no problem with your babies gland then it should come back down into range as the mothers thyroid hormone is used up and the baby is dependent only on the thyroid hormone that he /she can make with their own gland. It is important to recheck soon, as thyroid hormone is crucial to proper brain and body development in babies. Not having enough can cause retardation, low IQ and growth problems. Having too much can also have it's effects on the baby as well however. The TSH in your child looks good, so the pitutary gland is not sending out any message that more thyroid hormone is needed as the t4 is high (very plentiful) The T4 (storage hormone) actually converts to the ACTIVE thyroid hormone T3,within the body. It would be a good idea to have the FREE T3 ( not bound up with proteins/available) and FREE (available) t4 checked instead of just the TOTAL T4, as well as the TSH again. Please post the labs here and the ranges (get a copy) and we will give our opinions. Good luck and God's blessings to you and your baby!

Diagnosis of the situation
what is problem?
Talk to your doctor; was that Free T4 or total? The T4 is over range; you need to get further testing done. have them test for Free T4 and Free T3, along with another TSH. That will give a better indication of the problem.
