ultra sound thyroid

by rnomore4me, Nov 09, 2007 08:37PM
I had an ultra sound done on my thyroid. I received a copy it read 2.2 calcification below thyroid cartilage.
Thr right lobe measures 15.5 x 2.5 x2.5 cm (the Endocrinologist said she is going to have it reread she did not think it was possible) the left lobe measures 6.3 x 3.3 x 2.5 cm The echogenicity appears heterogeneous. The isthmus measures 1.3 mm

Complex nodules identified in both lobes, with large calcification identified in both lobes, with large calcification identified in the uppper pole of the right lobe.  Some of these nodules have a cystic appearance, and some have internal debris..
I wish I had a picture of where all of the calification is and what is debris? What does echogenicity? What is thyromegaly? What is multinodular gland?
I don't know if I will get a copy of the test that has been re-read.
The doctor is going to send me to a ENT doctor. Should I be concerned?

Impression
Mild thyromegaly
complex nodules noted in both lobes, consistent with multinodular gland
Calcification identified in the upper pole of the right lobe.

Multi-nodular means you have multiple thyroid nodules.  Calcification can be a sign of concern.  Debris could be degraded cells (dead thyroid cells) or old nodules.  Heterogeneous means that the nodule(s) are made up of different materials - meaning complex nodules (solid/fluid).  Because of the calcification and the heterogeneous nodules (and size of the lobe) this is something that needs to be followed closely by a doctor.  Your ENT will probably order additional tests; most likely a thyroid scan (small amount of radioactive iodine to determine what parts of the thyroid pick up the iodine and in what amounts - this determines if the nodules are producing hormone or not) and a FNA (fine needle aspiration or biopsy to check for malignant cells).

Here is some information on some of the terms and nodules in general:  http://www.endocrineweb.com/thyroid.html

Please make sure that your doctors stay on top of your condition.  You do have some concerning findings but please remember that roughly 95% of thyroid nodules are benign.  As for the other 5%, well, there are plenty of us on this forum who have been there, done that.  We're here for you.

Thank you so much for explaining this to me. The doctors seem so busy that it is hard to ask questions.

Do you have thyroid cancer?

I am so confused who does the biopsys the Endocrinogist or the ENT doctor? I am supposed to go to an ENT doctor, I guess I will get a appointment in the mail. I am getting nervous because i don't know what is going on. Who deals with the thyroid most a ENT or a Endocrinogist.
Is the Calcification what can contain cancer?

Sorry, been away from the forum for a few days.  Yes, I have papillary carcinoma as do three of my sisters.  Usually a surgeon will do the biopsies.  The surgeon is for the surgery and biopsy - the endocrinologist will work with you after the surgery to regulate your medications and followup if cancer is found.  They each have their roll and one can't substitute for the other.

Calcification don't cause cancer but can be (but aren't always) an indicator of cancer.

Here is a great web site that has some good info about thyroid disorders: http://www.endocrineweb.com/thyroid.html

I am sorry to hear you and your sisters have papillary carcinoma. I don't know what kind of cancer that is I will have to look it up. I hope all of you will be find.

Would you have any idea why the doctor is sending me to a ENT doctor? The doctor ran several blood test. If a blood test will tell if you have cancer why do a biopsy?
