vitamens and synthroid

I wonder those that take vitamens how you take them and if you take a lot of them how do you fit them into your day with the synthroid.  My doctor has started me on gingko bib..., fish oil, 5HTP, multi vitamen, calcium, l glutamine.  I am going crazy trying to fit all of this in.  Not only that but he told me to cut my synthroid in half and take it 2 times a day.  I took one-half at 7 am  and by 2:00 pm I was extremely nervous.  I took the other half  then.  I don't know if it was the synthroid or not as I also didn't take any lorazapam today at all.  I only took 1/2  .5 yesterday of the lorazapam.  It could have been that.  I really don't know.  Anybody got any suggestions  about any of this.  How bout anybody that takes their synthroid in two doses.   Thanks for any answer.   love linda

You also have to be careful with certain antibiotics and levo.  Some of them are:
ciprofloxacin (CIPRO)
levofloxacin (LEVAQUIN)
lomefloxacin (MAXAQUIN)
moxifloxacin (AVELOX)
norfloxacin (CHIBROXIN, NOROXIN)
ofloxacin (FLOXIN)

My endo split my Levothyroxine into 2 doages as well. I take .025 in the morning and another dosage at night. I didnt ask him why but I think next time I see him i will. It doesnt make any sence. Knowing that it has a 7 day half life. That would mean the effects of splitting the doasage would really be doing nothing at all.

I can only comment on the fish oil and multi- both of which I also take. These 2 are mainstream. The Gingko can be stimulating, I believe and I know nothing about the 5htp.

I can't really say about feeling normal. My thyroid levels are great, but I have been diagnosed with Neurologic Lyme which explains my remaining symptoms.  I will likely start treatment on Thursday with antibiotics for a long standing infection.

For now, go with the meds that make you feel well and don't dwell too much on needing them. I know, easier said than done. I just weaned off the antidepressant I was put on last summer. It is possible that you have something going on besides the thyroid issue. I hate to say that, but it could be true. It was with me, but it is hard to not know why our bodies betray us at times.

Are you sleeping well?

what supplements that I am taking would be harmful.  I am taking 5htp for depression, gingko bil... for mind, fish oil for ?, and a multi vitamin.   Thanks for you answer.  I don't know what he split it for - he didn't say.  He just said to split it.  I will try it for the 3 weeks that he asked me to and then go back to the once a day.  I only take 37.5 mg of synthroid.

Can I ask you another question.  How long did it take you to get back to feeling like you were normal.  I am apprehensive toward each day.  I don't know how I will feel   I try not to think about it but it creeps in not matter.  I hate taking the medicine but I feel like I need the lorazapam right now and the risperadol.  I would rather be feeling my self that the drugs but without them I am a mess.  I am only taking a very small dose of lorazapam and the risperadol.  1 mg day of lorazapam and .75 mg of risperadol a day.  They just scare me but it scares me more to get off of them right now since I went off the risperadol almost cold turkey and had a terrible reaction which I am still recovering from.  I went back on the risperadol.  I believe it it for anxiety.  My psychiatrist calls it thought glue.  I know they use it for ADD children so it is safe.  They also use it for mental illnesses at larger doses.  I am slowly gaining more confidence each day that I feel better. I am hoping that as I gain confidence that then I will be able to wean off the risperadol without too much trouble.  I know I will stop the lorazapam as I did before and I was taking 3 mg per day.  I don't know if you can answer any of these questions but I thought I would run them by you.    lol Linda

Linda-

The long half life means that the medication does not build up or leave your system for 6-7 days. The dose you take today- whether you split it or not- is not active in your body for almost a week.
Synthroid is a t4 med. It is converted to t3 in your tissues and cells. This process takes days, so the t4 you ingest today will not make you nervous from side effects. Synthroid is not the active form of the hormone- t3 is. It would be t3 that would make you nervous if your dose was too high. But again, this would take almost a week to occur, since t4 itself is not active.

I hope that makes sense.

Be careful with the supplements.

I don't understand what you mean by the half life being 7 days.  I think he is splitting it so that I won't be so nervous.  He didn't say but I'm doing it.  I also was taking l-glutamine and it makes your brain nervous so I stopped it.  I didn't want to because I believe it has been making me lose weight.  I seem to be less nervous in my brain but its only been a few days.  I don't know if it is the cutting the synthroid in half or stopping the l-glutamine.  Isn't it a shame that things that really help you have side effects.  The l-glutamine stops your craving for sugaar and that has taken 10 lbs. off of me.  I don't know what will happen now.  linda

Also you shouldn't take Iron until at least 4 hrs after your meds. Both Iron and Calcium interfere with the absorption of thyroxine.

I am glad he is helping you with the psychiatric issues as they relate to thyroid disease.

But it really makes no sense to split the Synthroid. The half life is 7 days.

It was my psychiatrist that told me to do this.  He also put me on the gingko, and fish oil.   I am trying the split synthroid.  I take it 7 and 2.  I don't know why he did that .  He is the one who put me on the synthroid in the first place.  I was on the generic and he changed it and it was like night and day for me.  I do trust him as he has helped me more than my endo.  He seems to know alot about thryoid and mental stuff.  linda

There is no benefit in splitting Synthroid 2x per day. It has a very long half life, so it stays in your system a long time. Was this an endo who told you to split it?

The fish oil, multi and calcium should be consumed 4 hours apart from the Synthroid.

Linda. I have not heard of splitting your synthroid  to take twice a day.  Calcium should not be taken until 4 hours after synthriod.  I'm not sure about the rest of your supplements, but your pharmacist should be able to answer your questions about this.
