Thyroid

My son got some problem in thyroid, during eating it bulges. we gone thro' for a consultant, ENT specialist and he advised to check by scan. based on that he found two stone in the  thyroid. Now doctor want to operate and clear the stone.
can you kindly confirm is it necessary?
