Surgery options?

I have a friend who at the age of 5 had a stick thrown (accidentally) at him, it hit him in his right eye. The surgery to removed the stick stunted the growth of his eye and the loss of his pupil and most of the iris. From what he has said the doctor also pulled the optical nerve out a bit to removed the stick and then folded and stapled the nerve. The eye was stitched up (19 stitches in all). He has no sight in that eye but is light sensitive in it.

Is there any way stem cells, iris and pupil surgery is possible to restore his sight? Is there such a thing? Would a bionic eye surgery help? What kind of surgery is out there to help regain sight for him?
