survive the surgery

by garfield1, Oct 30, 2009 07:50PM
Hi, my mum is 75years of age and has been living off 2 quarter size kidneys for about 30yrs now (only due to living a very disciplined lifestyle) recent blood tests have revealed that one of the kidneys has now closed down and the other is on its way...also about 3years ago mum was diagnoised with angina. The dr seems to be more concerned with the heart then to go in and do something about it...mum has been informed she can not have dialysis due to all her health problems....I have 2 brothers who are willing to give mum one of their kidneys, so why cant she have the transplant

pls if anyone can explain to me pls pls do

patiently waiting for a response
Many thanks

For the life of me, I cannot understand why they can't do dialysis on your mother. My father lived an extra 7 years on dialysis. (along with his health issues) I would pin the doctor to the wall and have him EXPLAIN this to you and your brothers. The reason she probably is not a transplant candidate is due to her age and then her health history. The drugs given after transplant must be taken religiously (is your mother capable of that at her age without forgetting?) and the drugs lower the immune system to where cancers can develop quickly and take over. (does your mother have any cancer history?) Those might be a few reasons why they will not consider her for transplant.

Thank you very much for your response.. yes I think you are spot on when you say put the dr up the wall because when reflecting on the discussion she did not give a comprehensive explanation as to why mum can't have dailysis, she seemed more concerned with the state of mums heart.  Yes, I think its time we used a more assertive approach on this (think we all just fell in a heap and have been in shock, with the no solution response)  and seek out a few more drs asap for different opinions.

In response to yr questions yes mum still has all her facialities about her, though all she wants to do now is sleep or lay down.  As for any cancer history, they said mum had blood in her bladder, then they said she didnt' now they say she does again, so who knows.

Thank you again for your response it's given me strength back not to just follow what the dr has said, Many thanks and god bless xxx
