COMPLICATION OF ORAL SHINGLES

by SNARF, Aug 19, 2008 02:42PM
I was diagnosed in 2001 as having shingles located on my lower right gum line. With every dental work and/or cleaning a shingle outbreak will always follow even with the use of medication. It has since spread further to the right along my lower gum line to now include the right side of my tongue and down the side of my throat/inner ear.  I now have constant acute and chronic pain, that is a piercing, burning that extends all the way into my right ear.

I can no longer handle even routine dental work/cleaning as the pain is too unbearable and the duration and severity of the attacks is just intolerable.

I understand that extracting my teeth won't help with the herpetic neuralgia or lessen the severity of the symptoms.

My question is, since even routine cleaning every 3-6 months will trigger an attack can I request to have prophylactic extraction to help minimize the occurances an allow the tissue and surrounding area more of a chance to recover? I am at the point I would rather have no teeth not even dentures if it means reducing the occurances of these attacks as they are very disabling and diminishes my quality of living.

Also, would I then pursue this through my primary care physican, dentist, infectious control, or other?

Thankyou
