Atypical

I have been dealing with facial pain for about 8 months now. First diagnosis was sinusitis with treatment of antibiotics, daily Claritin and Flonase. No relief. Still having pain, mostly in the jaw area. Pain is now getting more severe and moving to overall headaches. I believe I have atypical trigeminal neuralgia as my pain is more constant than abrupt. Any suggestions? Alternative diagnoses?

I have had atypical trigeminal neuraligia since 2002. It started abruptly after surgery to remove my thyroid. After  six months of increasing pain I wanted to die. Klonopin saved my life. I started taking 3mg a day and now only need 1.5 mg per day to keep the pain under the threshold. The top two branches of the nerve were affected for me- so my chronic pain is in my forehead, eyebrows, cheeks, bridge of nose, and front teeth. It's a mystery and I hate it but fortunately I found a treatment. See if your doc will prescribe you a trial dosage.

Have you been to the dentist?  I was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia and then told to go to the dentist just to be sure there weren't any issues.  I made an appointment, but my dentist was out of town, so the "substitute" dentist saw me.  She did x-rays and removed a white filling that I had, mentioning that some peope have a bad reaction to it. The x-rays were not very good, she had poor quality film and they turned out very dark. In the mean time I was put on medication for the trigeminal neuralgia and my pain subsided.  When I went back to my dentist, pain free, he saw that I needed a root canal.  I was on the medication for 6 months, the amount of time before I was to go in for a follow up, and I had the root canal done.  So after all this, I am pain free, but don't know if it was the medication that relieved it and I was one of the lucky ones to have the neuralgia subside due to heavy medication or if it was the root canal.
Hope this gives you an idea......
