Last week (Tuesday) my PCP told me that I have trigeminal neuralgia and started me on a slurry of medications: medrol dose pack, meloxicam, and baclofen. On Wed I called stating that I needed something for this severe pain that I could not tolerate it and he called in Neurontin on Friday (2 days later). Today, Monday, I went back to the PCP because I am no better and I have excruciating pain in my right ear, right eye, around my eye, upper right teeth, right cheek, right temple, and right side of my throat. My ear feels like my ear drum is going to bust open and set the rest of my face on fire. It hurts significantly to swallow (but only on the right side) and causes my ear to hurt worse when I do. The pain is making me nauseated and I am having a lot of trouble eating. I argued with my PCP today stating that there HAD to be something wrong with my ear. He insists that it is TN. He started tegretol today. I am having a very hard time accepting this diagnosis with the severity of pain in my ear and throat. I also feel as if I am choking on my right side which leads me to doubt the TN diagnosis. He said that if I dont improve in a week he would send me to neurosurgeon for evaluation. Should I accept TN? or is this really something else? Does TN cause throat and ear pain and make you feel like there is fullness in the throat/neck/jawline of the affected side? There are no swollen lymph nodes.
