atypical tgn

i have had atypical tgn for 10 years since i was 26.   mri showed nothing and after carbomazapine for 8 months had no symptoms apart from the odd twinge for years.  for the last 2 months it has got really bad but would rather not go back on carbomazapine.   Is this the best treatment?   At the moment just using co dydramol though it just takes edge off rather than really helping.    what should i do?

thanks for your advice.   I wll check and find what treatments are available.  Have to say after years without it I am totally unprepared for how bad it is.  Now on tramadol for the pain and will check options for actual treatment but really just want a quick fix!

There are lots of other options to try. You should ask your neuro what is available to you. Have you tried others? Carbomazapine is Tegretol, the 'go-to' drug for TN and is often used by some doctors as a diagnostic tool at the start. But it's not for everyone. I am one of those. I am allergic to it. (my rash is seen in my photos if you need it). For me, the side effects are worse than TN itself for me, but others have said it's life changing. Other people have listed Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine), Neurontin (Gabepentin), Elavil (Amitriptyline) and Lyrica (Pregabalin) as some alternatives.
I am currently on Lyrica + Cymbalta. I can't say that it's working but still playing with dosages.
