1yr old with Failure to Thrive

My daughter who recently turned one has recently been diagnosed with failure to thrive. She was born 50% and in the past 5 months went well into the 0%. She refuses to eat most of the time, or drink. I have actually dried up because she wasn't breastfeeding. She is even loosing weight when she is eating. Her actions are not behavioral (been checked 3 with that one). Her red blood cell counts are in "normal range" but are slowly dropping while her white blood cell counts are also in "normal range" but are slowly increasing. She was recently admitted into the hospital where an ultrasound came back negative, MRI was negative, however they found a moderatly sized hole in her heart (ASD). Her cardiologist refuses to think this is causing her issue. Were at a complete loss!! She has started having bluish/purple tinged lips after waking up also. The right side of her heart is also enlarged and when she was being admitted into the hospital her heart rate jumped up to 189. If it's not her heart than what is it??.....Any ideas!?!?!

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum
I am really sorry to hear about your daughter. Please consult another pediatric cardiologist immediately as her lips are getting tinged blue. Your daughter should be investigated for hormonal and metabolic disorders, gut problems resulting in poor swallowing, strictures in gut, malabsorption syndromes, kidney disease, heart disease and some infections. It is quite possible her heart condition is the culprit. Also it could be a bone marrow disorder.
It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage.  Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

When you wrote that your daughter's lips were purple/blue when she wakes up it concerned me. Maybe she isn't getting enough oxygen while she's sleeping, or it could be a circulation issue. Either way, I think that bananabrain454 is right, you should get a second or third opinion. There are doctors out there that are willing to push the envelope and exhaust every option to find out what the cause might be. You and your daughter deserve that. I wish her the best of health in the future. God bless.

I honestly don't have any ideas about what the problem can be. Sorry. But as for making her eat, if she doesn't what breast milk or formula, try water (plain or with a little bit of sugar). Kind of like a Glucose water to keep her hydrated, at least. If your concerned about my ideas you can look it up and see if it a good idea or bad or maybe even ask your doctor but my Mother always use to do this and we also did this to our niece. Or you can start moving her to a few easy solids or baby food. Maybe she is just bored with her food. Thats how my niece was and we got worried! Turns out she just wanted what we had. lol

Now, About the whole in her heart. I'm 20yrs and have a heart mummer too. I'm actually not sure what kind I have or how serious it could be or even if it caused me issues when i was young. But I am a health active 20yr old and I think your daughter is a trooper! God bless you both!

I only have one thing that i am strongly concerned about. Please go seek a seconded Opinion form several doctors!!!!!! I am 100% sure that there IS something they can do for your little girl. I've heard of ways they can deal with the whole in her heart if it is that serious. I do not think that that doctor is doing enough to help you both.

I hope i was any help.
Good luck and God Bless =)
Please keep me posted about how you ladies are doing.
