Abdominal Pain

by MegHockey, Nov 04, 2009 11:09AM
I am 18 years old and have been having moderate to severe pain in my abdominal area. It started 3 days ago really low and got so severe I could not stand. It started in an ice hockey game and got progressively worse. The pain has now spread all on the left side reaching up to my ribcage. Sometimes it's a severe stabbing pain or
throbbing. I had blood work done and an abdominal ultrasound which all came back normal. I've been cleared to play ice hockey and take a lot of ibuprofen but it really feels like something is just not right. The left side seems more swollen and a little tender. During my ultrasound it was very painful when she was on the bottom of my ribcage. I have not eaten red meat for about 2 years now so maybe I thought it was iron deficiency anemia or maybe diverticulitis, but everything came back normal. I don't think I got hit during a game since girls ice hockey is non-checking. They also said if it is not better in a week then I need to come
back. Any suggestions?

Did they also look for an endometrioma?  Did they suggest a hemoccult test (stool)?

Hi
Welcome to the forum!
Pain in the upper left abdomen and chest area can be due to stomach issues, spleen issues, due to an abscess below the left diaphragm, a hematoma (localized collection of blood), an abscess, or a muscle pull (as it happened while playing). Ultrasound would have ruled out spleen problems and an abscess below the left diaphragm. A CT scan would be more diagnostic.
The chances of it being a muscle pull are very high. It could also be an abscess or infection in the skin or muscle layer. A clinician can examine and tell if it is either of these.
I think you should discuss these possibilities with your doctor (PCP) and get a referral for a sports clinic and consult a sports medicine specialist. It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
