Blood Pressure Meds

I take Toprol XL 200 mgs. and Altace 20mgs. and have for many years however recently I have experienced an increase in blood pressure.  I have lost some weight and continue to diet as well as exercise.  My doctor has tried two calcium channel blockers with the results that I become very ill and unable to continue these medications.  Any suggestions?

I have read that sometimes the body gets used to beta-blockers (like the ones you are taking) and that they start to gradually become in-effective. I don't know if that is the case here, but it might be worth looking into.

I would suggest you look for the following online - Dr. Brownstein's site (he has many books, including one about healthy salt which can help reduce blood pressure), mark's daily apple has a free forum where people tell their success stories treating different health issues.

Altace is an Ace Inhibitor.
Toprol XL is a Beta-Blocker.

If you have had your blood pressure taken soon after you have been rushing around and exercising, drinking a hot drink like coffee as well as talking whilst the blood pressure is being taken, then the blood pressure will be increased.

As you have been exercising, make sure that you are drinking plenty of water so that you do not become dehydrated.  If your consumption of salty products has increased then that too will increase your blood pressure.

If you were taking the two pills and had the calcium channel blockers as well, that would have dilated your veins too much.  I also was not able to take calcium channel blockers as this caused me severe burning, itchy and red legs.

If you are feeling anxious and stressed that can increase your blood pressure.  If this is the case, the doctor could prescribe something to help you to calm down or you could do some form of relaxation.

Sometimes a doctor prescribes a diuretic as well as the hypertension medication and that helps the kidneys to function better and release any fluid retention.  It is still important to drink water though - 2-3 litres is usually recommend to be drunk daily, more if you are working out and sweating.

Best wishes.
