Bump behind little boy's ear

My little boy has had a bump behind his right ear from birth.  It was tiny at first, and the health visitor said she was definitely not concerned, it was just a fat lump.  He is now 6 years old, perfectly healthy, but I notice, and he does too, that it's still there and slightly bigger, more like a small marble now - he says he can move it around, but it starts to hurt when he does - it is on the bone behind the ear.  He calls it his 'baby bump'.  I keep telling myself it's the fatty lump.  But am inwardly worried.  Is it fat and will it never get any bigger?

Make an appointment with the doctor so that he can examine the bump.  It may be a ganglion cyst.

If the doctor feels that it does needs further investigation he will refer your son to the appropriate consultant for further examination.

You will not need to use your private medical insurance, but that is your choice.

Best wishes.

Thank you.  This is very helpful. We're in UK - so have to go to GP first.  We do have private medical insurance so I guess we can contact them once GP suggests removal.  Or should we insist it's removed anyway?   He's never been to hospital or had anything done - can't bear the thought of it!  But yes, if it's a case of doing it now rather than later...

Thank you so much for getting back.  No colour at all.  Just normal skin.

As arlandonbloom mentioned it could be calcium or cartilage or a limpoma. In any event he is of an age where it can be safely and easily removed. Ask your pediatrician to suggest an appropriate professional. General surgeons and practicioners can do this under local anaesthetic, but I would suggest a specialist.

It could also be a calcium deposit or built up cartilage. Does it have a color to it or is it just the color of your son's skin?
