Can it be shingles without a rash

My 95 year old mother had physical therapy. Afterwards she experienced such pain and suffering that a few days later she was taken to the hospital. They said it was muscular and released her after 2 nights there. The pain is excruciating and worsens every day. She can't sleep. We don't know what to do.
Maybe it is shingles without a rash. She said she had shingles and it was different. It is basically on one side but also on her spine. She can't lay on her back.
She is in assisted living in Florida. Does she go back to the hospital? I am afraid the pain will affect her heart ... at 95 years old.

Back ache with excruciating pain could be due to a slipped disc, especially if she got it after an exercise. She would need an X-ray or maybe MRI for this. No, it cannot be shingles without rash.
Other possibilities are muscle pull or abscess in muscle. Yes, she should be taken to hospital and shown to an orthopedic specialist.
I think you should discuss this with her doctor. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
