Can one break a bone in your foot and not hear it?

The reason I ask this question is because the only thing I can think of that caused my foot pain could have been when I jumped across a ditch. I did not have any pain immediately afterward. I was in the house and suddenly had pain at my 4th metatarsal which is I believe  the name of the bone below the toe next to the little toe.

Pertinent history:
I am a 45 year old white male who is 5-9 and overweight weighing in at 240 lbs. I know the weight is an issue. I believe my Saving Grace has been that I formerly was very fit and athletic up until the last 10 years now things seem to be catching up to me and it is time for a change.

Any thoughts in regards to my question I welcome and I will be getting an X-ray tomorrow unless the pain subsides somehow.

Pain at rest is about 4 to 5 out of 10 and sometimes ramping up to an 8/10.  I can walk but barely because pain stays up towards 8 out of 10.

Ok. I stumbled way back to this question I had over four years ago.  I honestly had forgotten about it!  Here's what was going on in case someone else may ever need help solving a similar issue:

It was another day or so before I went to the local walk-in clinic.  I was on crutches borrowed from a friend at that point.  They performed x-rays and the doctor tells me the bones are fine.  She then tells me the diagnosis:  cellulitis.  I left with a prescription for antibiotics and was fine after rtaking them s few days.  I was surprised because I would have bet money it was a fracture.
