My doctor recently put me on opana ER 40 mg., too be taken twice daily. I've been taking this medication for approximately two weeks. Since I've started this medication, I find myself drooling one drop of saliva uncontrollably, it just comes without notice and is very embarrassing. This has never happened before. Also, six days ago, I had a stroke. I'm only 42 yrs. old, with no history of high blood pressure nor anything else that could possibly cause one to have a stroke. My mother's father died of a heart attack and stroke at the age of 46, but other than that there's no other family history of stokes in my family. Can anyone tell me if opana could possibly cause a stroke and the type of drool as described above. Opana is the only new thing in my life period, and I'm afraid it's the culprit. Please help is possible.
The mechanism of action to contribute to a stroke is as follows:
Opana is an opiate and as such is a systemic vasodilator. That is to say, the drug keeps blood vessels open. The interior diameter widens and stays wide.
In the event of a "leak" (say you hit your head and have high blood pressure) in a blood vessel the body has a natural way of causing the blood vessel to constrict (in addition to the clotting mechanism) immediately to enable the "plug" to develop and stop the "leak". While taking opana (or any opiate) you increase the possibility of the same kind of leak that is in the Gulf of Mexico.
On the other hand, dilation of the blood vessels increases body capacitance, lowering blood pressure somewhat, and therefore decreases the chance of a "blowout" from high pressure.
That being said, there are two types of strokes. Those from bleeds and those from clots. Opana could contribute to a stroke from a bleed, but not from a stroke from a clot.
An MRA can usually (but not always) differentiate a stroke from a bleed vs a stroke from a clot.
