Chest Click

by pHacet, Jul 20, 2009 11:12AM
I have a discomfort in my chest that i can temporarily "cure" simply by pulling my ribcage outward from the centre of my chest.  This causes an audible "click" sound similar to clicking your knuckles.

It hurts briefly and then i'm fine for an undetermined time sometimes I'm fine for a whole day and other times it can happen several times an hour.

There is nothing I can identify as a catalyst for causing this, whether I'm at work, sleeping sitting behind my computer or doing anything else.  No matter what I do at some point I'll have to "click" my chest to get rid of the discomfort.  The weird thing is that I cannot feel it build up to a  point of discomfort.  I only notice the discomfort when I reach for something or when I stand up or sit down.

Please tell me if there is something I can do about it or what my course of action should be to resolve this.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
There is a strong possibility it is costochondritis (inflammation of the joint between rib and sternum. The inflammation around the joint area gives sharp pain on taking a breath. This can also cause tenderness on pressing the area which pains. It could also be osteomyelitis of the rib bones or a mild fracture. An orthopedic doctor can diagnose this for you.
Chances are that you have esophageal reflux (GERD), where the food in your stomach is thrown up into your food pipe or esophagus. This also causes burning sensation or discomfort in the chest area. Another possibility is hiatal hernia, where a portion of stomach herniates into the chest cavity through the diaphragm. This along with chest discomfort cause shortness of breath too. Consult your PCP about this.
It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage without examining. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
