Chronic dry cough

After a Middle East trip in 2005, I came down with bronchitis.  With meds I was able to get rid of it.  However, since then I cough every morning.  It is a non-productive cough that comes from my middle chest area.  Chest xrays came out fine and the breathing test I took produced a cough at the end but I did not need to use the inhaler. I was told it was asthma but I have no other asthma-type symptoms. Recently my sinuses started acting up.....of course, living in Ohio I guess one should expect that. Would it be advisable to see an EMT or Respiratory Specialist for a second opinion.  I am 62 yrs old and in excellent health other than the cough.  Thank you for any suggestions.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
Chronic sinusitis can result in a post nasal drip that can cause an irritating dry cough. Consult an ENT specialist regarding this. Do warm saline gargles. The other possibility is GERD or gastric reflux.
Omeprazole is a good drug to combat this. Along with it you can try over the counter antacids. Avoid heavy meals. Avoid too much of caffeine, tea, fried food and drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic fuzzy ones. Avoid heavy exercises within 4 hours of a heavy meal. Raise the head end of the bed by pillows to 30 degrees. Go to bed at least 2 hours after food.
If symptoms persist consult take a second opinion.
Hope this helps. I think you should discuss these possibilities with your doctor. It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
