Chronic juvenile nocturnal headaches

by chronic nocturnal headaches, Oct 24, 2006 12:00AM
Our son is 2.5years of age. After a rough preganacy with severe hyperemesis he was induced at 41 weeks weighing 6lb with a good apgar. He has a very strict routine in place. He is put to bed at 7pm and tends to sleep for a few hours then wakes ofr 2-4 hours, often writhing in pain, saying "sore head" between screams, always pointing to the top back of his head. The "sore head" has been ongoing for about 4 months since he could point and talk to where he is sore. We have tried all behavioural approaches and the hospital social worker has clarified she does not believe it is behavioural. He has been wheat and dairy free for 3 months with no differece. We got up to 5mg slow release melatonin per night before the pediatrician called it quits. His CT came back clear. Next on the list is an EEG but the pediatrician is at a loss. Any ideas?

I have a condition called arnold chiari malformation that tends to give me massive headaches. It is something that you are born with and can be seen on a MRI. I would suggest that you get an MRI of the head and neck. Keep us updated please. If the chiari is bad enough it may need surgery. I guess I am lucky and do not need surgery as of yet. Good luck!

Seems it would appear on a CT which he has already had and it came back normal. Thanks though. Take caare of yourself. It doesn't sound very nice.

Hi, Ok, I take that back. Sounds like it might not display on a CT. WIll talk to the pediatrician about it and see if we cen get an MRI done.  Caleb has no neurological indications and I see that an MRI can pick it up even when there are no symptoms. May I ask, are you headaches at night?
