Could my finger be broken?

Two days ago my finger slammed against a basketball straight on. It became swollen, painful and unable to bend, a constant ache and stiffness, as well as a bruise on the inside of the second knuckle. Now I can bend it almost all of the way but still painful to do so, the swelling is down as well as the bruising but it is still stiff. Also when I lay my hand flat on the table and hold down my finger from the third to second knuckle the remainder of the finger 3nd knuckle and above can bend backwards while the uninjured finger can not. Which seems to me like it could be broken or ripped tendon granting it increased mobility.

I don't want to get an xray without just cause because my mom thinks I am overreacting and don't want to go an end up proving her right.

i had this happen to me as well my finger in fact had a hairline fracture .it was hard to bend there was alot of swelling and some pain .it sounds so similar to my situation that i was compelled to write.it sounds to me like there is a good possibilty it could be fractured or broken .i would get the xray .
Omg thank you! Could you give me some more details about what your finger was like? It would really help
well in my particular instance my finger felt as though it had been jammed it didnt hurt terribly  bad.just felt numb kind of but a stronger feeling .i knew something was wrong but i couldnt get the feeling to go away but i wanted to finich playing basketball.so i to move the joints .i thought that maybe if i moved them around a little it might stop the numbness .maybe it was a pinched nerve or something or the joint wasnt lined up .when i pulled on my finger it turned what seemed to be 360 .it made me a little bit nervous so i went home and told my parents and they took me to the hospital and it was xrayed and splinted .so in my case it was fractured.the splint kept it from breaking the rest of the way and it heeled nicely .there you have it the full account .

You should have gotten an x-ray immediately. If there is a break it will heal in a position that may not be in your best interests and have to be re-broken to reset it. The positive side is that if they have to do that they will use anaesthetic and it won't hurt that much. You don't want to lose finger mobility.
