Dark gray/brown matter in clear phlegm from marijuana smoking

Is it normal, or usual for a heavy marijuana smoker (numerous times daily for 6+ years), to be coughing up clear phlegm with dark gray/brown globular matter encased in it, mainly in the mornings and randomly in small amounts throughout the day?  In the mornings there are much more dark pieces in clear phlegm, and when it randomly happens throughout the day, it is just small specks or chunks encased in clear phlegm. I have never coughed up any blood at all, and I have no other symptoms of illness, no fever, chills, etc..

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Dark grey or brown matter can be old blood or blood that has reacted with acid in your stomach. There is a possibility you have bleeding gastric ulcer or esophageal varices. Take Omeprazole empty stomach in morning and an antacid gel at bedtime. Refrain from smoking, alcohol, fuzzy drinks and spicy food. Consult a gastroenterologist. Take care!

a) I have the same symptom as OP- why would old blood look the exact same shade as the tar and smoke that builds up on my bong, with the exact same smell? It's not blood, obvi. Blood would be more rust-colored, and it's too watery; there wouldn't be separate bits surrounded by phlegm, even if it congealed as it aged. Blood would mix with the phlegm since they're both water-based.
b) Your response has many red flags. I'm no doctor, but I research the stuff I smoke. Why would smoking, an activity that involves inhalation, lead to internal bleeding unless severe coughing or another strenuous activity was involved? OP didn't say there was any pain or strain on their lungs, so there's no reason to believe it's bleeding- that's a rash assumption without any other signs of  internal damage. Carts are a bit iffy because it's easy to add stuff to them, but cannabis is a rather pure thing to smoke since it's literally just a flower (albiet a genetically engineered one). Cannabis smoking will clog your lungs which can lead to other problems, but it's easy to fix that with plants like mullein, which clear out your lungs by making more mucus and expelling it via coughing. Which, if you paid attention, is exactly what OP is describing.

So, to wrap this up: OP and anybody worrying about the same problem, I'm no doctor but here's my advice as a stoner. Your lungs are doing their job and getting rid of the excess smoke from your lungs. Yes, smoking does cause buildup in your lungs which leads to bronchitis and other conditions, but it can be cleared out if you take care of your lungs and take preventative measures like drinking lots of water and smoking clarifying herbs like mullein. The phlegm with dark stuff in it is just all of that happening. And to Dr Kokil Mathur, why is your only solution to avoid Christian vices? You're obviously just biased against cannabis, because that's the brick-wall advice that every doctor gives, in my experience. Prove me wrong.

Let me add that I do not smoke cigarettes, I used to for a for a little while (about 2 years), but quit about 3-4 years ago.I feel that it is tar/resin that has just built up over years of abuse, especially considering I am not physically active in the least bit. And I haven't had this issue with the dark phlegm long, maybe about 2 months and I really don't have a chronic cough . I took a total cold turkey break for about 20 days when the amount coughed up seemed to have 'peaked' about 3-4 weeks ago, and the amount seemed to slowly lessen each day. til it was pretty much happening ever other day and getting less and less.... Well I smoked again for the past two days and ended the break and i woke up this morning and coughed up one big 'chunk' of that clear phlegm with dark pieces, and for the rest of the day I've been pretty much clear.. I don't get what you mean there is nothing in marijuana to make you do that? From what I have seen there are pretty decent amounts of resin that come from burning/smoking marijuana, specifically high quality marijuana, and by looking at the inside of a thoroughly used marijuana pipe of any kind. I'm going to give it a bit longer until I go see a Dr, as I have no insurance, and im going to give the weed a total break for a few months, and perhaps start to get some exercise.

Being a chain smoker, and moderate marijuana user, I can say that I often have the same thing. I also know other people who do.

As a former smoker of 2 years id say no that's not normal because there's nothing in the marijuana to make you do that it has to be something else that you are doing mabey you should go to a clinic or a dr. And have that checked out
