Flu without cough

by RuiManuel, Jul 29, 2008 03:02PM
I have a sore throat, but somehow I can swallow and talk and I'm not coughing, nor do I seem to have a problem with my respiratory system. The worse is pain all over my body and sweating a lot (I dumped my bed last night) or being cold when it's summer and it's warm ( I guess this is fever). Also I have no appetite, even if I'm forcing myself to eat a little and drinking loads of fluids.

I thought it might be tonsillitis, as I used to have that as a kid (angina), but the throat doesn't seem to be bad enough for that. It's swallow on the sides, and there's white spots on it.

I'm taking Ibuprofen, but wondering if it will be enough as it's the second day I have this symptoms. I would appreciate very much any comment on this, particularly if anyone would have an idea of what it could be, as I thought it would be flu, but there's no cough.

Hi,
I would go get a strep test at the dr.. it sounds like it may be strep. Or possibly mononucleosis. You would have a sore throat with either of those, fever, chills and no cough. Hope you feel better soon.

Hello,

A sore throat can have many causes. Common viruses, and even the viruses that cause mononucleosis (mono) and the flu, can cause a sore throat. Sinus drainage (post nasal drip) and bacteria. like streptococcus can cause a sore throat.

Are you taking some medicines or antibiotics? Sore throat appearing after treatment with antibiotics, chemotherapy, or other immune-compromising medications may be due to Candida, commonly known as "thrush."

Treatment for sore throat includes salt water gargles, hard candies, sprays for example, Chloraseptic) and lozenges. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen may help control the pain.

If the symptoms persist then pls consult a physician. He will recommend a "rapid Strep" test. The "rapid Strep" test can usually be done in the office and takes 15-20 minutes. If the result is negative, it is often followed with a strep culture. If either of these is positive, the sore throat is generally treated with penicillin or another antibiotic.

If you need any more information then pls post us.

Take care and God bless.

Thank you for your replies.

I feel much better today, I don't feel dizzy anymore and it seems my appetite is back.

I did not take any antibiotics. I believe the cause would have been either smoking, swimming in a lake under rain (temperature changes), or maybe sexual contact that would have happen some time ago though.

I'm taking 600g 3 times a day, drinking camille tea, eating garlic, and something called "ease a cold" for cold and flu.

I hope I wont feel worse for going to work today.

So, if I understood correctly if the symptons wear off I do not need to go to the doctor, or do you think the symptons can go away and the virus/bacteria develop into something worse without showing symptons?

Thank you again for your comments
