Heart Worries, with Chest pain and Discomfort.

by Wencer, Oct 25, 2006 12:00AM
Hello, I should start with a few things about myself. Age 20 Gender Male , weight 182 lbs height 6 ft 0 inches. I also have been diganosed with an anxiety disorder though please dont simply brush it off as such.
On the 26th of september, I failed to fall-asleep and soon had myself a pounding heart, raceing heart , skipped beats then a slow rate. After failing to deal with it myself I woke my father and asked him to take me to the ER: He sat down and checked my pulse and such for 2 hours said to him it seemed like anxiety. Slowly since then ive got progressivly worse feeling it harder to do things coughing chronicly etc and what i think are skipped beats, As well as pain in the center and sides of my chest. I did see my PCP she had my pulse and blood pressure taken, she listened to my breatheing and my heart I believe. She gave me antibiotics thinking it a cold. I took them feel no better. Now I fear I may have heart failure of some kind, now my father tells me there is no history of heart problems under the age of 60 on my mums side and my fathers side has none that he can really remember. Though I don't know what that means.. I don't drink , I smoked for 1 year (ultra lights) then quit and am now fully smoke free etc. I seem to hunch over when I walk and check my pulse often and seem to think I have Heart Failure, Since for the last few days it has been feeling weak and such. And my blood pressure seems to varry.. though mostly somewhere between the 120's/80's and 130's/90's sometimes much higher sometimes a bit lower etc. Thanks Michael. (PS I fear my heart will stop :X)

Forgive me ! I forgot to add, That I also get bad cases of dizzness just sitting around ( or standing doesn't seem to matter) and I do also have back pain.

The chest pain can be in the Center. sometimes on the sides or near the breast bone etc.

If I were you I would make and appointment to see a cardiologist just to make sure...It does sound as if some things are going on but I am not a doctor and it better to be safe...Take care of yourself.  I also had heart problems earlier this year (Dilate Cardiomyopathy) which is a weakening of heart muscle, the heart kinda enlarges, but subsequently with medication my heart has improved to just about no signs of the condition.  I continue to see a cardiologist though, because they want to continue monitoring the heart to see if the condition returns.  But please make an appointment soon.

I COMPLETELY know what you're going through!!! You will not feel at ease until you see a cardiologist! Trust me. I've been in your place. I have Anxiety/Panic disorder and the same symptoms you have had cased me to become obsessive about my heart problems. First of all, see a cardiologist for two reasons: to rule out any kind of heart problems, and to ease your mind. I had so many tests and just KNEW deep down that something was wrong with my heart. Every test I had came back normal. Are you taking any Anti-anxiety meds? I have been taking them for a few years and my symptoms are not completly gone, but they're controllable. Good luck and God Bless!

P.S. Cut out ALL of the caffeine, including chocolate and see if this makes a difference in any of your symptoms.

The best thing to do would be to make yourself an appt to see a cardiologist.  Ask your general practitioner dr for a referral just to put your mind at ease if nothing else.  I suffer from generalized anxiety disorder as well and have similar problems.  I get weird pains in the center of my chest, breast bone area that seems to radiate to each side - i have found that 9 times out of 10 it is usually gas or just normal every day aches and pains.  HOWEVER, my anxiety disorder makes me think i have a heart problem.  My dr sent me to a cardiologist and i wore a holter monitor for 24 hours which was compeltely normal.  They also did an echo and the same results.  When everything came back normal, my dr told me that i had gad and it is hard to believe that it is all "in your mind" as they will tell you; but it is a very physical disease.  If everything comes back normal, try to accept that you are fine and ask your dr for recommendations on pyschotherapy or medication.   Good luck! :)
