P.S.   A herniated disc is in the lower back and can cause lots of pain as the nerve is pinched.  A chiropractor can sometimes manipulate the nerve out of the way -  An Osteopath can also do adjustments.

A doctor will recommend NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen or tylenol.   Hot and cold packs help to stop the spasms.
A hernia will show if you stand up and cough - look in the mirror while you do this or have someone else look at your abdomen to see if a poosh or bump appears when you cough.  If so, see a doctor about it.  Bad thing about a hernia is that part of the intestine can "fall" through the hole in the muscle wall and get strangulated causing an infection or peritonitis - which can be very dangerous.

Yes, this can be caused by lifting heavy things.  It is called sciatica and it is caused by a nerve being pinched in your lower back.
Lie down on your side and bring your stomach in as tight as you can several times.  Then turn over to the other side and do the same.  You might have to do this every morning and night for at least a month to strengthen those back muscles that you strained.
A good hot bath before bed will also help to relax those muscles just before you do the exercises.
If you have epsom salts - add a cup to your bath water.  The magnesium in the epsom salts will keep you from getting cramps or spasms in you back and will help you heal faster.
     Wishing you the best.
