Hives and heartburn

This is not a question so much as info to be added to the ongoing discussion. I too have experienced hives followed by painful daily/nightly bouts of acid reflux and belching. I've lost 8 pounds in a week due to nausea. I was tested for H. pylori(negative), lipase and cbc both normal. As a precaustion my doctor gave me a 10 day round of meds for systemic yeast. I also had a cat scan and that was normal. I went to an allergist who is having me tested for food allergies and suggested I take h1 as well as h2 antihistamines. He suggested I might have Eosinophilic Esophagitis which is an inflamed esophagus due to an allergic reaction. I found this website if you want to read up on it: http://ezinearticles.com/?What-is-Eosinophilic-Esophagitis?&id=2289454. It sure seems to fit the description of my symptoms. I have an appt with a GI doctor in 2 weeks to arrange an endoscopy and biopsy to confirm eosinopiles in the esophogus. I have found some relief with Allerest and Prilosec. Not eating after 3pm seems to help with the nightime attacks of heartburn. I will keep you posted.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Yes, eosinophilic esopahgitis is one possibility if H pylori infection is ruled out. Other possibility is Crohn’s disease. Crohn’s disease is a difficult entity to diagnose. An upper GI series using barium dye is done to see the condition of small intestines. The degree of involvement of the large and small intestine may vary from person to person.  A biopsy is the most confirmatory. A recent advancement in Crohn’s diagnosis is video capsule endoscopy.
Hope this helps. Take care!
