I keep getting this - Alcohol related

Once per year or so I get this condition, usually THE DAY AFTER drinking too much, sometimes it does not start until the night of the day after or even two days after (so maybe its something else?) These 'episodes' vary from light to bad. These are my symptoms:

1) extreme nausea where I can't breathe properly, or I feel I have to ventilate to breathe. This is usually on the first day or two of the episode, depending if its a light or bad episode.

2) extreme diarreah (very very runny) lasting for 3 to 6 days.

3) stomach cramps problems (stomach rumbling for days in light episodes, heavy vomitting for one day in beginning of bad episodes)

4) tingling in the lips and face in bad episodes only on first day.

5) cramping in the hands (only in bad episodes first day)

6) fever/chills (bad episodes I get so cold I shiver and have to put on 5 layers of clothes, light episodes just a little fever or feeling unusually cold. This only on first day of episode.

7) my stool turns dark green but maybe this is Pepto Bismol?

8) lower back pain but usually on the first two days of the episode.

9) joint pain - like flu but also only on the first two days of episode

I was admitted to the hospital one time in my worst episode, they diagnosed it as food poisoning (in The Bahamas) but another doctor later said I probably had alcohol poisoning.

Is this alcohol or food poisoning?

I do drink a lot and I eat a lot of seafood. I live in The Bahamas and in the Dominican Republic.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Actually it could be either. Both alcohol and sea food can cause food poisoning and food intolerance.
Allergy to alcohol can vary depending on the nature of alcohol and on the batch, age and label of the same type of alcohol or wine. The allergy to alcohol or to coke even can be due to preservatives, coloring agents, yeast used for brewing, sulfites, gluten products in the alcohol or even to grapes and other bases. It can develop at any time during a person’s life. You need to go for an allergy testing for the ingredients of the beverage you take to know what you are allergic to.  Also possibility of fatty liver and other liver afflictions should be considered as improper metabolism of alcohol too can cause problems.
Do discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined. You will also need a sea food challenge test to rule out sea food poisoning. Try taking either sea food or alcohol alone to see which is the culprit but keep some emergency measure at hand to overcome allergy (like Epipen). Take care!
