Inflammation of Carotid artery and neck pain

To: All & doctors please!

I have been having right neck pain (6 months) that when its at its worst feels like a line down to the shoulder blade to chest  However, the worse starts below the ear.  It got sooo bad i went to the ER and they said it was a swollen lymph node.  They gave me antiobiotics and the swelling went down.  A month later it started up again. I went to the ENT and they ordered a CT scan and it came out normal. They gave me the results over the phone.  I ask if it could be "inflammation of the carotid"  they kept saying everything shows normal.  I ask if inflammation shows on the CT scan?  They said if it was they would see it.  However, i said you had me taking Laviquin antibiotics for a couple of days and it may have brought the inflammation of the carotid down and its not showing up on the CT scan?  They wouldn't answer that question but seen evasive!

Does anybody know if the inflammation went down would it show up  when you go for the scan?  I need to know for sure?

Please give me some feedback ...please anyone??!!

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Inflammation of carotid artery will be better visualized by a duplex ultrasound than by a CT scan. Also the pain can be due to inflammation of lymphatics, a pinched nerve or due to a muscle pull.
Hope this helps. Take care!

Can a ENT doctor order this Duplex ultrasound ....or will this have to be done by another doctor?

I did call and request this but it seems some doctors do NOT like to be told what to do ..i sense opposition.  They even ask me where i got this information from ...which i avoided commenting.  I just want to get to the bottom of my pain ...without going through all this ...monarchy/or  ...bull stuff!

Hi
Duplex ultrasound shows the complete hemodynamics of the vessels and this will be apparent even when there is no visible swelling. However as I said earlier it could also be pinched nerve. It is difficult to decide which test you should go for first—MRI of the spine or duplex ultrasound. I guess go for MRI and if this is normal, then for the ultrasound. Take care!

The ENT is recommending i go to a spine specialist for the neck because they see the CT scan as normal.  Should i go ....or request the ENT  to do further testing?  Does the
ENT  do duplex ultrasound?  Will this show up on the ultrasound if the swelling is down at the time?

If the inflammation was no longer present at the time of the scan, then it wouldn't show up in the results. If the swelling comes back, I would request another scan before taking any action to counteract the swelling, so that it will show up on the scan.

Good luck,

~Dame
