With the build up of mucus at the back of your throat this is usually called post nasal drip.  Any problems are always worse at night time.

My doctor prescribed a nasal spray for me as I am not able to take decongestant medications due to them raising my blood pressure.

He also advised that I do steam inhalations 4 times a day for the duration of 10 minutes each time.  I did find that did give me relief and also helped to unblock the Eustachian tube that was very uncomfortable and blocked with mucus.

So try the steam inhalations.  A bowl of hot water with Vick or Olbas Oil in.  Place your head over the steaming bowl with your head and bowl covered with a towel and breathe in the steam.  Take care not to get scalded.

You can also try menthol and soothing throat lozenges.  Have a hot drink with honey and lemon to help sooth the throat.

Make sure that you drink plenty of water and juices. If you do have a large amount of mucus, cut out diary produce and especially milk.

Best wishes.

I have been experiencing similar symptoms for about 2 months. Have had an exhaustive number of tests done at ENT and an Allergist. All results have come back negative for any allergy or issue with sinuses. It has progressively getting worse, especially in the evening ? Feels like a lot of mucus collecting in the back of my throat, and it won't budge ! Have tried several recommendations from various sources, however no relief in sight!! All I know for certain at this point is what it is NOT.
Not acid reflux/ or gastro related
Not deviated septum
Not allergic to anything
Sure would like this to just go away, but not looking like it will anytime soon :-(

The Prilosec is to cut down your digestive juices so that they do not flow up the Hiatus Hernia.  The Prilosec will not help with clearing up thick mucous that is in the throat.  If the Prilosec is not helping very much, another medication may work better so it is worth making an appointment to see the doctor.

My husband is on Pantaprazol for his Hiatus Hernia and that allows him to eat all foods without getting gastric juices flowing up to his throat.  He has never had a problem with mucus build up in the throat or coughing.

I do not have a Hiatus Hernia, but do get a lot of catarrh and mucus sometimes that I cannot cough up.  With my persistent irritation of coughing up fluid and no sooner it came up I had to clear my airways and throat again, I was sent to have a lung function test some years ago that revealed that I have asthma and this is triggered off by different irritants as well as the cold.

If you find that your voice gets hoarse, this can be caused by the acid reflux that can damage the oesophagus and the vocal chords and this can cause a persistent cough.

It is always best to see the doctor to get checked out to find the cause and receive the appropriate medication if this is deemed necessary.

Best wishes

Hi typex..I have almost the same kind of symptoms..(need to clear throat..thick mucous and the feeling of something caught in my throat)  Yes it does drive you nuts.  Went to see a gastroenterologist went through all these tests and the G.I. Doc said it was a hiatal hernia. I take Prilosec for this annoying problem(which sometimes helps) I hope your problem gets better.  Best hopes and God Blesses.

I you believe in homeopathic or home remedies, try Black Elderberry and take a Magnesium supplement.

My Mom and I take Elderberry for the hacking and phlegm that comes up every morning.

A Magnesium deficiency can cause the feeling that the throat is closing among many other symptoms.

Hope this information helps you.

Wishing you all the best,

Sounds like you  have congestion from either a viral or bacterial infection or from an allergy.  The mucus is dripping at the back from the nose.

I suffer from chronic post nasal drip with the symptoms you describe, drives me insane too.  The doctor prescribed me with a nasal spray to dry up the mucus.  You can also try steam inhalations, take antihistamines in the event it may be a allergic reaction to dust or cigarette smoke or perfumes etc.  My antihistamines do not stop my problem, but I find the nasal spray helps.

It would be a good idea to see your doctor to rule out asthma or a throat infection.

Make sure you drink plenty of water.  Won't stop it, but it keeps you and your throat hydrated and gets rid of any irritant in your throat.

Best wishes.
