Itching palms . . . . but no money

I've had SEVERE itching of my palms for about 8 months now.  Went to the doctor.  This is NOT contact dermatitis.  I have that when I wear jewelry and this is not the same sypptoms.  My palms are not red until after I am digging at them.  It is so severe that I have bruised the palms of my hands (both hands) from the scratching.  There is no redness or dryness.  I had my liver enzymes checked and they are within normal range.  Doctor gave me ointment to use and it helps, but does not stop it.  I had carpal tunnel surgery done 15+ years ago, both hands, and I did bring this up to the doctor.  She said after this length of time, this should not be a problem.  I am not having carpal tunnel symptoms.  I'm a 58-year-old secretary, don't use any kind of metal in my hands.  this has me stumped.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Contact dermatitis to jewellery may be different to contact dermatitis to any other thing. Hence it cannot be ruled out completely without an allergy test. Extreme dryness of the palms can be one cause. Tinea manum (ringworm of hand) or scabies are other causes. You must get an allergy test done, either a skin test or RAST, to know what you are allergic to. Please consult your skin specialist as it is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Take care!
