Itchy red feet in evenings only in winter

My husband is having a serious problem with his feet intensely itching in the evenings. They get red around the edges and on top of the toes. He wears work boots and thermal socks in the winter. This does not happen much at all in the summer. When this happens, he cannot tolerate anything tight on his feet, like socks. We have tried many topical solutions, i.e. cortisone creams, water free moisturizers, anti-itch creams. They do not itch during the day, only after he has removed his work boots. His boots fit well and they are leather, quality footwear. The socks he wears with them are synthetic thermal fabric, but some days he wears cotton and it seems to make no difference. What can he do?

Glad to know that you have found out that your husband has athlete's foot.

Washing his feet every day and drying well in between the toes and applying the cream will help.  You can also get antifungal talc too.

Tell your husband not to try on other people's boots and to not allow them to use his.  Walking bare foot in shower rooms and round swimming pools is another area to watch.  Athlete's Foot as you know is a fungus and fungus love warm, dark, moist places.  So keeping his feet and boots dry is the way to go.  Get him to wear clean dry socks every day too if he does not do that already.

Best wishes.

Thank you everyone who responded. The antifungal seems to be the trick. That and the antiperspirant spray. I guess we must not have tried the athlete's foot idea. I was thinking we had. At any rate, it seems we are on the right track.

Mostly only when he works, although yesterday we noticed his feet were ok until after we got back from the gym. So we are trying antifungal cream, spraying with Arrid xtra dry and I'm going to get Domadoro (sp?) to soak his feet in. These were suggestions I found. We will see how this all works.

As you have tried different lotions and potions that have not worked, try getting your husband to soak his feet in some warm water with baby oil.  You can also try soaking the feet in salty water if the baby oil does not work.

Applying natural set live yogurt to the cleaned and dry areas that are bothering him, will also help to reduce any inflammation and itching.

If his feet perspire a lot, applying some Bicarbonate of Soda into his boots will help to get rid of any moisture - and odour.

Best wishes.
