Left side of neck pain

by jmanning, Nov 08, 2007 12:20PM
I had this happen to me 6 months ago and the doctor diagnosed it as a salivary stone. Before I was able to recieve treatment the pain just disappeared.  This is hard to explain, I have no symptoms of salivary stones except the pain in my neck on front left side. No dry mouth no swelling in mouth or neck, as a matter of fact my mouth is extremely moist. The pain is not constant but comes when I move my head a certain way,to the right or upwards, speak in a certain tone, or if I hold my head straight and gently press on the right side of my neck just under my jawline. The pain is sharp and radiates up into my left ear. This is the exact pain I had 6 months ago. I fell it also when I swallow if my neck is turned to the right. I can hold my head down and press on the right side and not get the pain. Anyone ever heard of this. I also have sudden weight gains and then gradual losses off and on with no diet change. Can this somehow be related to my thyroid? Or is this normal for salivary stones? And if so why do I have an excellant supply of salivia?

Salivary stones do cause your symptoms and don't always cause dry mouth or swelling unless the glands become inflammed.  Bad breath is a more likely sign.  If you are hurting in the neck under or just behind the ear, then you may be having problems with your eustasian tube which drains the ear into the throat.  See a specialist called an ENT or Ears, Nose, and Throat specialist.  Both stones and ear problems can be serious even without painful symptoms.  good luck
