Leg problems...

I have a terrible pain in my legs. I started working out recently and my calves feel like their in knots. If I sit down and don't move for a while it hurts to walk and when I walk I walk like the Duke from a western movie...I wish I was joking. My calf muscles stop hurting if I walk around for a while but the moment I stop moving for a while the pain comes back. I was able to run a mile as the pain doesn't hurt all that bad while moving but legs are killing me. Any ideas?

I've treated them with pain patches but they didn't work and advil has no effect.

Any help appreciated. This has gone on for two days now.

you need more info in your profile concerning age weight other conditions.  I have extreme calf pain  with excercise ( i walk 1 mile am and pm) but am 58 male with heart disease.  My pain has been diagnosed as PAD, in my case my arteries have become clogged (cholesterol levels uncontroleable in the 450 range) and now the capilaries are becoming restricted causing much pain in the toes and calfs.  my pain comes on quite quickly, in the first 100 steps, i gut my way through it with no pain relief, and it generaly stops within 10 minutes of warming down.  my mile walk averages 14 minutes.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
The commonest cause of pain in the calf  is DVT and clots and post exercise. Pain in the calf area can also be due to pinched spinal nerves in the lumbo-sacral area or a pinched nerve at the knee joint. A nerve conduction study should be done. A MRI of the lumbar spine should also be able to throw some light. A deep vein thrombophlebitis or intermittent claudication (spontaneous spasm and relaxation of arteries) can also cause similar symptoms.
At times it is also due to low sodium, potassium, magnesium or calcium in the body. Hence serum levels of these electrolytes should also be checked. Dehydration is another frequent cause.
It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Do discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
