Liver Problem - 30% function

A friend of mine's doctor just told him his liver is functioning at 30% -- he is a former alcoholic (only quit a few months ago) and the doctor wasn't comfortable giving him a life expectancy.  He is over weight, doesn't exercise, smokes (former drinker), but would like to have a ''time frame'' of what to expect.  Does anyone else have an experience in this department?  I've never dealt with something of this nature before.  Thanks!
