Many Symptoms with no diagnosis..Please Help

by mmgarcia1, Feb 04, 2008 11:45PM
I have had a series of ailments that started when I was 17, I now 28 years old and am mot any closer to a diagnosis than I was the first time I went to the doctor. It all started with stomachaches when I was 17. I was first told I has small peptic ulcers and GERD. As the years passed, I had a series of ultrasounds and a colonoscopy, every time I had something done, I would have another problem, colitis, gastritis, and diverticulitis. This has been an ongoing problem since then. All of a sudden when I was 21 I started getting severe kidney infection, I would be hospitalized for a week at a time and I would get them almost every 6 months to the date. I still have this problem and get at least one really bad kidney infection a year. There are even times that I don't have an infection yet my kidneys hurt and feel swollen. Then my skin started acting up and I was sent to an ENT specialist for allergy testing, there I was told I have a rare allergy to glycerin, which is in almost every hygienic product you can think of, you can only imagine how painful a shower is to me. Those are the major symptoms, I have other minor symptoms that I have noticed. I go through periods of time where I have redness on my face that is different than a rash because there is no pain involved, a lot of hair loss, extreme fatigue, headaches that last for days, extreme stiffness in my neck and shoulders, as well as tired legs(feels like I am not getting enough blood flow). I have asked asked my doctor to please help me and that I am willing to undergo whatever other tests she feels necessary to find out what is going on with me. It just seems like she is never taking me serious and blows me off because for the most part I look like a healthy 28 year old. Every time i get hospitalized they test me for mono which always comes back negative. She also always tries to tell me I am depressed, which i don't feel that way at all. I am just so very tired of getting the run around. I would really like to know what this could be. If any one has any suggestions, I would be so happy to listen. At this point, I would just feel relieved to know anything I am so tired of being treated like I am a crazy person. i know deep down that this is just not normal and healthy people do not feel this pain every day.

Redness on your face could be mylar rash, possible sign of lupus. Could account for your kidney problems too.

Are there any tests that I can suggest my doctor give me in order to find out if this is what it is?

How are your serum calcium levels? Ionized calcium? If these are elevated, have your parathyroid (NOT thyroid) hormone level done...These are many of the symptoms of hyperparathyroidism...

It's been a long time since I had these tests so I forget exactly...but think it's a  serum ANA.

You may have already had an ANA test done. If the ANA is positive, then you could have an autoimmune disease. However, I wouldn't be surprised if your physicians already ordered this test on you.... you may want to double check.

If your ANA titer is negative, then I would definitely pursue looking at Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / ME and/or lyme disease as a possible diagnosis. Both of these conditions can make you that sick. I have CFS and have flu-like symptoms all of the time.

Definately talk to your doctor about autoimmune disorders.  Many autoimmune disorders have similar symptoms and are hard to diagnose.  Also, some of your other symptoms for example I have hypothyroidism can be caused by an autoimmune disorder.  I have been going through tests since I was 23 and am now 28 and still have no answers but every so often I have new and unusual symptoms occur with no diagnosis.  My sed rate and C reactive protein are always high so at this time we are just monitoring those rates and evaluating any new symptoms.

If it is an autoimmune disorder it takes a good while to diagnose so be patient but keep being persistent with your doctor and request to see other specialists such as a rhuematologist, neurologist etc.  I have seen both and still nothing but I know something is wrong and my "flare ups" as they call them get worse and change everytime.  Google autoimmune disorders particularly Lupus and compare your symptoms.  But remember you do not have to have all the symptoms to have the same diagnosis.

Good Luck
