Neck irritation, chest pain and 'noise'

by garrett5, Mar 27, 2009 12:25PM
Hi.
For about 3 months now, I have been having neck 'pain'.
It takes different forms and I would describe it more as irritation, like something is stuck or inflamed inside.
I saw an ENT specialist 2 and a half months ago - he diagnosed globus hystericus, stress, etc.
I have also had chest pain in this period, on and off, at the top of my stomach just below the ribcage, which hurts a little to the touch.
Over the last few days, I have heard a weird noise coming from the chest, like a 2-second noise which is hard to describe but nothing like the noises you get with a cold or phlegm.
So at the moment my neck is feeling irritated, like something is stuck both sides of the Adam’s Apple and I have a pain in my chest in the ribcage area - not too bad but constant - and I just heard that weird noise again.
Any ideas?
Regards Gary

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
In all probability the symptoms are due to esophageal reflux (GERD), where the food in your stomach is thrown up into your food pipe or esophagus. This also causes burning sensation or discomfort in the chest area. Another possibility is hiatal hernia, where a portion of stomach herniates into the chest cavity through the diaphragm. This causes acidity like symptoms and burps too. The weird sound that you hear is these burps or regurgitation.
Omeprazole is a good drug to combat this. Along with it you can try over the counter antacids. However I would recommend you see a doctor and take medication under a doctor’s supervision. Avoid heavy meals and eat 5-6 small meals in a day. Avoid too much of caffeine, tea, fried food and drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic fuzzy ones. Avoid heavy exercises within 4 hours of a heavy meal. Raise the head end of the bed by pillows to 30 degrees. Go to bed at least 2 hours after food.
If these tips help you then the diagnosis is more or less confirmed.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
