Neck swelling

Has anyone out there ever had neck swelling between the neck and clavicle? Doc's say mine is not a mass, but don't know what it is.

Hi,

Swelling between the neck and clavicle could be due to trauma at the site, local infection including skin infection, Lymph node enlargement - the supraclavicular lymph nodes are here, Due to pus collection / abscess formation at the site. It could be a solid or cystic lesion.

Do you have any other associated symptoms of pain, redness? Is it warm to touch? Do you have any fever? For how long have you noticed the swelling? Do you remember any trauma or injury to the site? Which side is it on - right or left?

Nothing can be said without a proper clinical examination. It would be best to reconsult with your doctor or take a second opinion if the swelling does not subside in a couple of days.

Till then you could try some cold compresses, rest the arm and forearm on that side, apply some local pain relief medications and you could also take some anti - inflammatory medications.

Let us know about how you are doing, if you have any other symptoms and post us about what your doctor advises.

Regards.

Hi Doctor
Thank you for answering this post. I have had the swelling for nearly 8 mo. It is on both sides. Like a soft swelling, not painful nor hot to the touch. No infection that I know of and no trauma either.

I do have other symtoms (symptoms) but am told they do not relate to the swelling. I feel they could be related since they all started at the same time. {late January}
The other symtoms (symptoms) are unrelenting severe posterior neck pain, headaches in back of head, deep aching bilateral shoulder pain, some arm pain.

Also I do get pounding heart beat sometimes and my face gets very warm and blush.

I am suffering so much I can not believe this is really happening to me. I hurt sooooo much all the time. Pain meds and PT have done little to help. During all this time I also had a thyroidectomy, in April, due to multi-nodule thyroid. One nodule tested positive for pappillary carcinoma. Doc's said cancer did NOT spread and do not believe the swelling is related to that either.

Very frustrating.

Thank you for your kind consideration.

Hi,

From what you describe i suggest you see a neurologist for the other symptoms you are having and also that you have been having them for quite some time now.

It would help to discuss with your doctor about getting a fine needle aspiration cytology of the swelling done if other blood investigations and xrays are normal.

Till then you could try some cold compresses, rest the arm and forearm on that side, apply some local pain relief medications and you could also take some anti - inflammatory medications.

Let us know about how you are doing, if you have any other symptoms and post us about what your doctor advises.

Regards.
