Normal Ultrasound -- but I have a growth

Two weeks ago I started getting sharp pains in my upper left abdomen. Two days after the pain started, I noticed that I was started to have significant swelling in the area. Two weeks have gone by and it's bigger still. Now it's a hard lump that is about 3.5 inches across and 1 inch high.

I went to the doctor last week, and he had me do an ultrasound. During the ultrasound there was an obvious white circle on the screen where my lump was, and the nurse mentioned it looking like a lot of connective tissue.

Doctor called earlier today saying the ultrasound was normal but didn't offer any other details. Even if the ultrasound came back normal, should I still get a CAT Scan? I've gotten no answers from the doctors about what it is, and the lump has gotten bigger in the last couple days. It's uncomfortable to sit or lay down for long periods of time.

Basically the main question is, even if the ultrasound came back to be normal, is there still a possibility that something is wrong?

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Pain in the upper left abdomen and chest area can be due to stomach issues (GERD or hiatal hernia), spleen issues, due to an abscess below the left diaphragm, a hematoma (localized collection of blood), an abscess, or a muscle pull (as it happened while playing). Ultrasound would have ruled out spleen problems and an abscess below the left diaphragm. A CT scan would be more diagnostic. Yes, it would be worth it to go for a CT.
Take a late night snack. Raise head end of bed. Take Omeprazole empty stomach in morning and an antacid gel at bedtime. Refrain from smoking, alcohol, fuzzy drinks and spicy food. If pain is due to GERD, acidity of hiatal hernia, then these tips will help. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

I'd request a copy of the abdominal ultrasound and maybe even go to a clinic or the hospital, especially if you're having pain.

Hang in there and feel better soon,

Sam

Thank you both for your help.

I was told I have GERD and I hiatal hernia, along with esophogitis a week before the lump formed.  When I asked my gastro doctor if the lump could be part of the hernia, he felt it and said it wasn't a muscle.

I've been watching what I eat recently to get rid of some of my GERD and hernia problems.

The lump is even bigger today.  Sometimes it feels like it's solid, and then sometimes it feels like the tissue around it has swollen.

Again thank you so much for your help! :)
