Numb arms and hands when sleeping, sometimes painful

Hi everyone,
I am really hoping someone can help me out here- I have mentioned this several times to my GP- however, she has not looked into it and it is proving to be so stressful.
Every night for the past 9 months I wake up with both of my arms and hands numb. This then turns into pins and needles and pain. I feel like it is getting worse as I woke the other night and was unable to lift my left arm- I had to pick it up with my other arm to bring it back to life. Sometimes it takes 5-10 minutes of movement to get feeling back. If I ever only have the numbness in one arm it is never the arm I am laying on, it is always the top arm so I know it is not from putting pressure on it. I have experienced numbness from laying on my arm while I am asleep before and it is completely different to that. I am starting to get anxious to go to sleep as I know that I will wake up in some pain unable to move my arms and hands :(
Please help me figure out what this is, I just want to know and start treating whatever is causing this.
