OCD

by ademska, Sep 22, 2008 12:35PM
Figured I should probably mention this as well.  I've always had mild obsessive-compulsive disorder, but for the last couple of months---classes starting and new job--- it has been out of control.  My primary "thing" is to constantly stretch the skin between my fingers and toes, and two weeks ago it reached a point where they actually started to bleed.

My doctor put me on 10mg of fluoxetine (in addition to the 300mg of bupropion I take for depression), but it doesn't seem to be helping.  Occasionally I take a Xanax, but it's not working so well either.  Sometimes I have to wear those toenail painting separators (they help) just to function.  Is there anything else I can be doing, or is this just a stressor issue?

You may have a magnesium deficiency.
If you google for magnesium, OCD, you'll find information about treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Hello,

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic anxiety disorder most commonly characterized by obsessive, distressing, intrusive thoughts and related compulsions. According to the Expert Consensus Guidelines for the Treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder, behavioral therapy (BT), cognitive therapy (CT) and medications.

The specific technique used in BT/CBT is called exposure and ritual prevention (also known as "exposure and response prevention") or ERP; this involves gradually learning to tolerate the anxiety associated with not performing the ritual behavior. For some, neither medication, support groups nor psychological treatments are helpful in alleviating obsessive-compulsive symptoms. These patients may choose to undergo psychosurgery as a last resort.

Lovingfun,
Have you tried magnesium supplements?
You can google for information about OCD and magnesium.   Mag deficiency causes so many problems, including mental health issues.

Wishing you the best,
Carol
