Pain in the lower back and buttox after delivery of pregnancy

I gave birth to my third child five weeks ago. Almost immediatly after the delivery I began experiencing Sciatic like pain. I had previously been diagnosed with Sciatica before my pregnancy but it never flaired up long enough to figure out what was causing it. What's more is I had absolutley no problems with the Sciatica during my pregnancy. Right after delivery the pain set in. The reason I am posting this is because this time it is different. When the pain started it was in my lower back and would radiate into my buttox. I was still able to lay down at this point and found sitting for long periods very uncomfortable. About two weeks after though the position of the pain changed. (My boughts with the sciatica prior to pregnancy would only last for 2 weeks at a time coincidently). Now the pain starts deep in my buttox and radiates all the way down my right leg and then goes to about my knee on my left leg. I can not lay down anymore and now find sitting much more comfortable. I actually have to sleep sitting up. If I lay down on my back of stomach I get this horrible throbbing sensation in my legs that I can not deal with. Same things happens when making a bowel movement, the pain just throbs in my buttox and down my legs.
I have began seeing a chiropractor and he is now debating wether his adjustments are doing any good because I have still not seen any relief. Can anyone give some insight on this, or suggestion as to what kind of doctor to see next. I have a 7 yr old,2 yr old and a 5 week old and feel like a horrible mom right now!

I FEEL FOR ALL YOU Ladies. I have sciatica now too. It started 1 year after my baby girl was born. I had the delivery from hell.  I was 9 days over due. So, then the midwife suggested I go walking. So, I did and that night my husband and my cousin and I went to the hospital... I had 10 hours of excruciating back pain labor. I thought I was going to pass out... I was 7 centimeters dilated when like 10 people came in the room saying, “Jennifer you have done all you can *(which was bull since many woman have 2 days of labor). “Maybe you should consider c – section.” I was like, “ What,I want natural child birth darn it!!?”

I am a full figured woman and so of course they played the fat card on me LIKE I AM THE FIRST FAT WOMAN THAT HAD EVER GIVEN BIRTH IN HISTORY LoL. So, reluctantly I said, “Ok darn you people. I hate you all. I will have the a c- section!” *(Of course these darn doctors  loveeeeeeeeeeeeeee c – sections. It makes them rich, and makes us crippled. What the heck do they care right?)

So, I was wheeled into the operating room having OMG contractions and the INCOMPITANT ANESTHESIOLOGIST proceeded to stick that darn spinal block needle in my spine over and over AGAIN never getting it right mind you. I said to him or mentioned to him before hand that I had a pre - existing back condition. So, I did NOT want that spinal block. I wanted anesthesia. Then again they said, “Oh it dangerous for the baby and you are a large woman, so it is not a good idea.”   **(Mind you they do gastric bypass on many people wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy bigger than me.) So,that idea was bull **** is you ask me.

So finally, they gave me the needle and I became paralyzed from the neck down and after they took out my daughter or should I say RIPPED HER FROM MY UTEROUS, I passed out nearly dying. They threw my husband and my doula and midwife out the room and intubated me and bagged me trying to bring me back to life. Of course, I passed out.   When I woke up, I had the spinal headache from hell. **(Of course, they do not tell you any of this **** before hand.) So, then I had to, after 2 days of begging the doctors and nurses to help me and listen to me because I was losing my hearing and I felt my head was going to pop off my neck and body, I pleaded to them for some relief. So, I was brought downstairs to pain management they sedated me took an x-ray of my back to see where they out the original spinal block needle too my blood put of my arm and out it in a huge scary needle and stuck it back into my spine to make a clot so my spinal fluid would stop leaking out. Mind you I was not bake to out my let leg down onto the floor for 4 months.

Now, 1 1/2 years later I am suffering from low back pain sciatica in buttocks and leg pain. I am in agony at times and live in pain pills and pain patches
I KNOW WHAT YOU POOR LADIES ARE GOING THROUGH AND I AM THINKING OF SUING THS DAMN DOCTOR ***(MAYBE YOU GUYS SHOULD DO THE SAME)

AND NOW AS A WOMAN SAID ABOVE ME, I AM SO SCARED THAT THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN I WILL NOT HAVE ANY MORE KIDS. 1 IS ENOUGH. WE HAVE DECIDED TO ADOPT ANOTHER CHILD IN A FEW YEARS.

So on that NOTE, I am sorry you and I and all of us are suffering.

I am planning on losing some weight

Exercising.

Praying.

Going to the chiropractor.

Physical Therapy.

ACUPUNCTRE AND

JUST APPLY FOR DAMN DISABILITY

But I do have a beautiful baby girl.

But I am in pain allot.

So, ANY WAY….

I hope you ladies get better.

God bless.

Any one want to chat about this add me in AOL aim or yahoo

jennymrocks is my screen name and my email is: ***@****

Thank you and God bless,

Jennifer

i just had my fifth child 4 months ago.i had alittle lower back pain  with my other pregnancies but never the leg pain until i was about 5 months pregnant with the last baby.i had an epidural with each child, inductions with all and wound up having a c section after 18 hours of labor with this baby.the strange thing is that the pain seemed to ease up when i was about 7 months pregnant but came back about a month after delivery.it starts at my buttocks on my left side and radiates down my leg all the way to my foot.i cant stand up for long periods of time.i can do something as simple as sweep the floor and im in agony.my kids are very helpful they help me with the house cleaning .i wish i could do it by myself i feel like a horrible mother sometimes.my kids are 7,5,4,2,and 4 mos.i dont like going to docs and i always question what pain meds i can use because i am nursing  my 4 month old son.ive heard there are exersises i can do to help this .ive got to find a salution soon because its getting worse.

I have extremely bad lower back pain with some inflammation over my tailbone.  I get sciatica pain most all of the time.  Sometimes I am simply just stading or walking and the pain almost knocks me down.  Stretching helps a little.  My homebirth was 24hr labor with 5hrs pushing.  Very bad back labor and I had my husband pushing down on my back, which felt good a the time,  but I think I really hurt my back during his birth.  That was 11yrs ago and I still have pain regularly.  I'm finally thinking about getting treatment.  2 more kids later but very easy births in comparison.
You are definetly not alone.  It's good to know.

Hello - this is rather pertinent to me because I have just come back from seeing the consultant this evening - having been offered surgery on my back for a herniated disc which is pressing on my spinal nerve. My symptoms have been exactly the same as yours - you described it very well, the throbbing and horrid, sharp pain.
I have decided against surgery - the risk of paralysis with incontinence is 1 - 2%, but am going to have a steroid injection in my back next week which should relieve it for 6 - 8 weeks and perhaps give my back time to get back to normal, I am also going to have physiotherapy.
The first step should be to get an MRI scan - oh and I forgot to say, I have a six month old baby with an epidural delivery and an extremely quick 5 minute pushing period.
It is not nice exactly, but it is somewhat reassuring to know that perhaps this is just another of those things that comes with having children.
Best of luck with your treatment and try to get that MRI scan - living with pain is the worst thing.

Thank you for your comments.  I want to make mention that this delivery was definitely the most strenuos and forceful of my three.  I was induced at 39w 3d.  I started at about 2 CM with the baby being a very negative 3.  I was placed on a pitocin drip and left on that for about 18 hours.  The doctor was in no rush to break my water because it was Easter weekend and she had stuff to do that Sat.  I was ok with that cause she broke the sac with my second one and I had hard labor for 7 hours.  I did not want that again. Well she waited till about 3:30 am then next morn to break my water at 8 cm.  I went from 8cm - 10 cm in less than 20 min.  I told the dr I had to push and they barely got the table together before I litteraly threw her out in three pushes.  Is there anything that I could had shifted, tore or ripped when delivering her because of the force that may have caused all of this?  I just don't understand why after her I was able to lie down to sleep and now the throbbing is so terrible that it is out of the question.  It hurts to drive for a period of more than 20 minutes, the throbbing starts.  Even after sleeping sitting up all night I feel throbbing in my legs but not near as bad as when I lay down.  Does anyone have any more insight?

Thank you for assuring me I am not alone in this.  I did not have an epidural, so that ruling is definitely out.  However I was in labor for about 18 hours and after the doctor broke my water at 8 cm I pushed the baby out rather quickly and forcefully after about 30 minutes with three very hard pushes. Does anyone think that this may have made a difference?

Yes - it sounds like horrible sciatica.  I had the same thing after my first baby.  Just like you are describing.  Here is the good news = physical therapy help a ton.  Here is the bad news - my little guy is now 13 and I still have intermittent, awful sciatica pain.  Get your doctor to refer you to PT, medicine (Advil...) won't help for long and you need a long term strategy.  Good luck and Congratulations!

Did you have an epidural?  I had the same thing happen to me when I gave birth to my son 10 years ago.  The next day after delivering him, my entire left leg hurt so bad, actually it was worse than the labor, nurse told me sometimes when they give you the epidural they nick the sciatic nerve.  To this day I have to watch what I do.  Lifting, bending, and stretching above my head seems to aggravate it.  Maybe try having a lumbar MRI done, they could probably tell what's going on from that.  I had a extrememly bad labor, 12 hours, I was only dilated 4 cm, they gave me the epidural only because I told them I can't wait till 5 cm, I then after epidural was given went from 4 cm to 10 cm, in 5 minutes, needless to say, I couldn't feel anything, they used the largest forceps that they could, I'm surprised my son was born with a head, the doc yanked and tugged on me so bad, that my hip and pelvis bone hurt for weeks, along with my leg.  I don't know if this helps, but sometimes things like these never completely go away, I know, it sucks!  Good luck.  Oh by the way, after that experience, I decided to have no more kids, one is enough for me.  Take care.
