Painful dime size knot behind ear

The other day I noticed that I have a dime size knot behind my ear. It is rock hard and painful if pressure is applied. I am a little worried about this...Just some background I have a hypothyroid, but I do not think that this relates to this at all...Could it be a tumor? Help! I am really scared!

Thank you so much for your suggestions, and taking time out of your day to help me with this issue. I am going to go have this looked at, next week, when I get paid. (The wonders of not having insurance! ugh!) Have a wonderful day!

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Lump behind the ear which is hard and painful could be an abscess, folliculitis (hair follicle infection), an infected cyst, an inflamed lymph node or a neurofibroma (localized harmless swelling in of nerve and connective tissue). However swollen lymphnodes behind your ears could be due to chest infection, tonsillitis or pharyngitis, dandruff, or infection of ear.
The inflamed nodes settle down with time. However, it is important you consult a doctor and get this examined. If it is an abscess or infected cyst, it will need to be drained. If it is hair follicle infection, it will need warm compress, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. Neurofibroma that is causing pain will need to be excised. Usually a CT or fine needle aspiration cytology is done for diagnosis.
Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral.
Take care!
