alright, well i got it right and it was pretty heavey for a few days. the flow ended yesterday. it was heavy enough to go through a few tampons. does that mean i am not pregnet. how do you know that you are not pregnet without taken a test? i have none of the simpons..
thanks jackie
Hi Jackie -
I honestly believe your risk of being pregnant, if any risk at all at this point, is EXTREMELY low (like MAYBE 1/2 percent if even that much). Although some women do have some bleeding during the early part of their pregnancy, it would be bleeding that would occur at all times, not just around the time of your "normal" period (even though this period is a bit later than what you remember as being a norm for you) I'm quite confident that what you're having is a regular, normal period.
The term spotting typically refers to the amount of blood - usually very little - basically a "spot" here and there, not a constant flow. It's quite normal for a period to start out with spotting and then the flow will increase over the next couple of days. It's also quite normal to have some spotting for a couple of days after the "full" flow ends. Another time that it's normal to have some spotting is basically in the middle of your cycle, when you're ovulating (typically around day 14-15 of your cycle).
I wouldn't lie to you - I HONESTLY feel that you don't need to be worried about a pregnancy at this point.
Robyn
its been heavier now, but not by much. i am also cramping every now and then? am i still at risk of being pregnet?? what do they mean when you are just "spotting" is it just light blood, and very little?
jackie
That's perfectly normal - mine used to be very light the first day, heaviest on day 2 and 3 -- I had a hysterectomy in 1997, so I don't have to deal with all that anymore, though, thankfully!
thanks for the idea! i use to do that on my phone calandar.
but today i had some blood just at 1:00 and went to the bathroom at 3:00 to check and not much was on there it wasnt light it was darker blood, but there wasnt much of it. When i wiped there was nothing on the tolet paper. is this a good or bad thing? usually when i get my period it does start of with less then begins to get more and more blood?
good or bad??? thanks again for the help!
Hi Jackie --
I'm glad you found this site and feel that you can talk here. It's important to be able to talk to SOMEONE.
You are still quite young, so it's very common to have irregular periods due to fluctuating hormone levels as you go through puberty. The "average" menstrual cycle time is 21-36 days, although it's also possible to have a "normal" cycle a few days either way (a few less than 21 days or a few more than 36), so you're still withint the "norm" range with having your last period on April 22. and yes, it is possible to have cycles that were normally running about 28 days and then suddently begin having cycles that are either shorter or longer.
I also meant to mention that (I don't know if you are or not, just another possibility) - if you happen to either be dieting or exercising more than you used to, that could also affect your cycle. When I was in high school, I was in the marching band (I know, geek!!) and my cycle used to get screwy during the school year when we were doing a lot of practicing and football games - a combination of the additional exercise I was getting and also the fact that although I wasn't "trying" to diet, I also wasn't eating as much as I normally would. Again, this is quite normal.
One thing I can suggest is get yourself a small calendar that you can keep track of your periods on - what I used to do is circle the date that I thought my period was due on (based on an average of 28 days). Then when I would get my period, I would count 28 days from there and circle that date. This way if anyone happened to see the calendar they wouldn't really know why the date was circled (other than my mom and sister because they did the same thing on their own calendars) - it's not like you'd be "announcing" it to anyone if they came across the calendar. If you wanted to, you could also keep track of your sexual activity on that same calendar (just for reference in case you have a concern about pregnancy again) by marking those dates some other way. This is also a good thing to do (marking your cycle dates), not only to keep track of if you might possibly be pregnant, but also to keep track for a while as to how your cycles are running. That way you will know if things change drastically, in which case you would want to be seen by a gynecologist, or at least a family physician.
I do honestly believe that you are fine now - however, if you still don't get your period in say the next week or so, then I would suggest getting a home pregnancy test (available at any pharmacy or Walmart, etc. without a prescription and without needing a parent's approval) just to be sure. If you do take a pregnancy test (if you haven't gotten your period in a couple of weeks) and it is negative, I would suggest going to a doctor just to get things checked out - hormone levels, other blood work, etc. - just to make sure you're healthy and there isn't something else going on that could be messing with your cycle.
I'm glad I could be of some help and please don't hesitate to ask any more questions you may have - about anything.
Robyn :)
thanks, and i still havent gottin my period yet (april 22nd was my last) does that mean anything. im not 100% sure about my cycles because i didnt really keep track that closely. i am 16 years old, and i cant talk to anyone at home so this is why im talkin to others. thanks for your help if you really do honestly believe i am fine i will try and relax.
i do have a friend were her cycles go from 16 days to sometimes 42 days. could i just all of a sudden have a weird cycle or did it always have to be like the same way.
thank you so much for the help.. jackie
It's quite normal to have some cramping before and during your period - the problem would be if it was EXCESSIVE or debilitating (where you're doubled over in pain or can't get out of bed).
I do think that your stress level could certainly be affecting your cycle, as well as your recent cold. Yes, stress can make your period lighter, heavier, later, earlier or even miss one.
I quite honestly think you can totally relax about this and feel quite confident that you are not pregnant.
Just out of curiosity - what is your age? I'm just wondering because a younger woman often times has a more irregular period cycle than an older woman. An irregular cycle can also be a result of a hormone imbalance, so if this "unsual" cycle (for you) continues, you may want to check with a doctor about getting your hormone levels checked - it's a simple blood test.
Try not to worry - I think you're fine.
well i did have some cramping before my period?? and my periods are usually are like that heavy.. i am very worried just because i am 5 days or so late.. yes i have been fighting a cold. i havent been sexually active ever since that last time. so you just think i am just over stressing myself. would you be this worry this much?!?! ive also heard that if your stressing yourself to much you can acctually miss your period???
thanks,
jackie
Yes, your period being heavy enough to soak a tampon usually is a good sign that you are not pregnant. Unless, of course, if this type of flow is a LOT heavier than what you normally have. There is always a slight chance that heavy bleeding could be a sign of either a miscarriage or a tubal pregnancy, the chances of either of these are slim and since you said that you don't rrecall having any excessive cramping, I would say the chances are even more slim - I would consider what you had as a "normal" period.
Also, yes, it's very possible that your fighting a cold could delay your period. Any time your body is under any kind of stress it can affect your cycle - and being sick is a stress on your body, so it's very possible this could happen.
I think you can relax and be almost 100% assured that you are not pregnant - you had what I would consider a normal period after your last sexual activity, you haven't had any sexual activity since that time and even when you did have the sexual activity before your last period, the type of activity that you described would make it extremely difficult, almost impossible, to get pregnant from.
Let me know if you have any other questions/concerns!
Robyn
thank you so much for the information. my last period that i had was heavy enough to fill a tampon thats a good thing right? i've been getting over a cold could that also delay my period?
thanks jackie
If you've not had any sexual activity since your last period, then I would say your chances of being pregnant are 99.999999%. There actually are only a very few days per month that are the "target days" for being able to get pregnant and since you said you've not been sexually active since you actually had your period last month, it would be just about a miracle if you were to be pregnant at this time.
Also, since you've had a normal period since your last sexual activity, it's also very highly unlikely that you are pregnant. Yes, some women do have some bleeding early in pregnancy, but it's not usually "their normal" for a period - there are usually other signs/symptoms that it is not their norm.
Being a few days late with getting your period is very common. There are many things that can affect your cycle, including being stressed - and if you were worried about the possibility of being pregnant, you obviously had some stress going on, so that could affect your period - timing, length, flow amount, etc.
well i cant really remember any unusal cramping. i think i am one day late? should i be worried if my bf and i havent done anything since my last period, so i couldnt of gotting pregnet from this last month? could i still have the chance of being pregnet even after a normal period.
It's very highly doubtful. Unless the heavy bleeding was accompanied by unusual cramping, etc., I would say it was probably your "normal" period. If accompanied by unusual cramping, etc., you may want to check in with your gyno to check for possible (but not probable) tubal pregnancy
so after a day my period got heavier, and heavy enough to go through the tampon witch would be my regular period. would i still have to chance of being pregnet?
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
If the flow is heavy, it is unlikely that you are pregnant. It is true some women bleed during the time they are supposed to have periods even when they are pregnant but usually it is a light bleed. The only way to confirm is take a pregnancy test. A blood pregnancy test would be more confirmatory than a urine one. Also if the test is positive, chances of abortion will be more if you are bleeding.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
The brown is always normal during your period!
I would have a simple pregnancy test to put your mind at rest first.
The brownish colour, is quite normal for most women, and usually shows, before the real red blood.
Dont worry to much, just test to be sure
Wishing you well
Nicola
Before I got on Depo. I would have the same problem. My period would usually come in the next couple of days. But it would not be a bad idea to have a pregnancy test done.
well the bleeding has become more and more.. also ive had quite a bit of cramping. what do you mean by spotting.. does that mean very very little blood?
I think you could still be pregnant. I know that many women experience spotting early in pregnancy due to egg implantation, and then again around the time that their period is supposed to come because the embryo splits into two, creating the baby and the placenta. I would take a pregnancy test if I were you, just to be sure.
Also, you said that you were still on your period when this activity took place. that, alone, makes the chance of pregnancy lower, as the timing of your cycle would not have put you in the typical fertile time for a woman.
So, I quite honestly believe that you can totally relax about this. Stress definitely can affect your cycle, giving you heavier or lighter periods and also make them more painful.
Of course, if you're still concerned about a pregnancy, you can always take a home pregnancy test - they're relatively inexpensive and have gotten much more accurate over the past several years - so long as you follow the instructions correctly - if it says to test your first urine of the morning, then do that, otherwise the results may not be accurate either way.
I hope this has helped to make you feel better.
