Please help - 3 weeks later, still not recovering and in lot of pain from laparoscopy lasering for endometriosis

by yogini100, Oct 14, 2009 11:57AM
It is three weeks tomorrow that I had my laparoscopy for endometriosis treatment. I am nowhere near to resuming normal activities (still off work, still on the sofa for most of the day) due to a sharp burning pain in my lower left abdomen/groin. My Consultant seems to tell me someting different every time I visit him and now has put it down to post-operative inflammation but I am losing confidence in what he is saying as time ticksby and I keep getting anout type of drug to try that does not help. The pain does not feel like period pain, it is much more acute and sharp. I am feeling very worried and if anyone has any knowledge or experience in this area, I would be very grateful.

I had the laparoscopy to investigate potential endometriosis. They found endometriosis in the Pouch of Douglas and on the ligaments supporting the uterus. These were lasered and I also had some troublesome cells that were causing bleeding from my cervix cauterised at the same time. I was told I would be ready to go back to work (I have a very active and stressful job) after ten days.

I stayed in hospital overnight after the operation and the pain on the next day was so awful, I nearly blacked out every time I stood up or needed to twist my torso due to a sharp, searing pain in my lower left abdomen, close to my groin. I was too doped up on morphine when the Consultant visited me to articulate this clearly so I went home in the afternoon. A week later I still felt very unwell - I had no appetitie, nausea, wretching and light-headedness. I called out my GP and he advised that I was readmitted to hospital as he thought I had irritation of the perituneum. Blood and urine tests revealed nothing. On examination my stomach felt soft, not hard although extremely tender. My Consultant thought I may have an infection of the cervix. I was discharged the next day and took a six day course of antibitoics. I started to feel a bit better in myself - the nausea etc and the general pelvic pain eased a little but the sharp pain in my lower left abdomen remained.

Now I am still in moderate to severe pain, depending upon what I do. I take paracetemol and ibruprofen but it doesnt really help. Only when I take my stronger pain killers do I get any relief, but these make me feel very tired and out of it.  The whole area on my lower left abdomen is still very sore to touch. I have tried to resume light activities i.e. a ten minute walk to the shop and took the tube to see my consultant yesterday. But any activity results in terrible pain either later that day and/or the next day. Today I woke up in pain (like a burning, searing pain, sometimes stabbing) and I have had it all day. The pain is now even radiating down my left hand side of my leg,. My lower left back also aches badly My Consultant admits he isn't entirely sure what is wrong but is reassured from the blood tests and that my tummy feels soft that it is nothing serious and is likely to be post-operative inflammation. He has given me pills for nerve inflammation but they are making me feel dreadful - I couldn't even stand up this morning I was so disorineted.

I anyone with any knowledge in this area can help me I would be so grateful. I am not sure what to do. Pre-op, I was a very active woman (31 years old, working a 60 hour week in the City and climbed Mont Blanc only three months ago). I am unable to work, unable to to do more than the smallest amount of activity without triggering pain and just feel somethiing is not right to still be in this state three weeks after the operation, for a procedure that should only take a week to recover from.
