Post nasal drip, sore throat or something else?

by Concerned5, Mar 12, 2006 12:00AM
Hi if anyone can respond to me I'd be much grateful

I'm a seasonal allergy guy (take Allegra-D during my big allergy months like Nov/March.

I had been feeling a little cold/allergy coming on such as coughing alot and post nasal drip. I developed a sore throat but when I looked at it with a mirror there were 3-4 red dots on the back of my throat, and of course mucus. It's not strep because I know what that looks like (had my tonsils removed when I was younger)

My question is, could these red dots be caused by just the back of the throat getting irritated by the post nasal drip?

I actually have been feeling alot better today as far as swallowing, and wanted to know if that can be somewhat normal?

Thanks everyone

Yes, sinus drainage can cause red spots on the back of your throat. Try some Sudafed to dry up the drip, but remember to drink lots of water with the Sudafed. This helps it work better, and keeps you from getting a dry throat from it.

Just an FYI...if the sore throat continues, you need a throat swab.  Red dots can also be indications of strep throat, which you may need an antibiotic for.  Good luck.

Thanks Mary,

I think I'm pretty confident when I say it's not strep, I had a history of strep before I got my tonsils out 8 years ago, and haven't had it since. I know what it looks like.

It was just 3 or 4 red dots on the side of the back of my throat, which actually feels much better today. I'm guessing it was just caused by my seasonal-allergy post nasal drip

Thanks for your input

i have post nasal drip and sinus infections to the point that i have to pour salt water in my nose once a week.  i'm sure someone out there can relate.  i use to get sore throats, now it just feel like it's a blockage in my throat, i can swallow and eat but you can feel that it is not going down like it should.  has anyone experienced this??  i have sinus problems so badthat a lot of time i feel as though i am getting dizzy or in another zone.  does anyone experience this??  i just would like to talk with someone who experiences all that i experience may be we can share remedies.  i have gone to an ENT doctor, he couldn't find anything, at first they thought i had allergies that was to be the reason why i felt light headed or dizzy, then when i was tested for allergies it came back negative, i have NO allergies.  i went to a neurologist to see if there was something wrong in my brain, that came back negative.  then it was said that i have post nasal drip.  i take rhinacort nasal spray and that does not seem to do anythng.  now i have this lump in my throat, by the way i went to a gasteroligist and had a bareum sallow test and they found nothing there which leads me to believe that it is my post nasal drip making this happen, possibly irritating my throat and making it feel as though there is a lump.  it doesn't happen all the time but it may happen every two weeks lasting for about 2 to 3 days.  i have had it with going to doctors.  i need a break from seeing them and paying my copay.  i have seen 4 doctors in 2 weeks.  has anyone experienced what i am going through, and can you enlighten me as to what to do??

ditto for me. wow.never had this beforre. my mother died of tongue cancer so this area scares me even thought shhe was a heavy smoker and I have never smoked. What do you do for the sore throat pain it is terrible. However iI have found a semi cure. Advil makes it go away. I have had it for three weeks. Doctor ENT said nothing there. Wow. Frustrated as this is the first time that I have suffered from this. Joe

I too always get post nasal drips and it would cause my throat to become sore. I would always go to a doctor that would test me for strep throat. Of course, that came back negative but they would throw me on antibiotics anyway and give me a steriod shot. The steriod shots give me really bad anxiety so I stopped getting them and stopped going to the doctor. Now, when I feel post nasal drip happening and sore throat I have my own remedy. I use nasonex nose spray twice a day (morning and night), take tyenol severe sinus, constantly blow my nose or hack up mucus, and am always drinking water. Also, throughout the day I gargle salt water. I have found much relief in this and usually only do it for a two or three days.
