My mom had a stroke in 2005. She progressed from the stroke until about 2007 when all of the past symtoms came back (equilibrium, gait, etc.dystonia where she no longer has use of her arm). We have 5 neurologists and each have told us she has not had another stroke, but they have not been able to diagnose the downfall in her health. They have attributed it to parkinsonism and menieres, although one contradicts the other.
I feel like they are not addressing the issue but whether trying to make her sleep through it and "believe it is not really there." It is very painful to see her like this and feel helpless to aid her. In reading some posts, this may be a condition where there is really no help.
If someone has found a silver bullet or can make some suggestions, let me know. She has just completed a round of Dexamethasone and DHE, but to no avail. The pain returned within 3 days of us being home.
PCVAS(post cerbro-vascular accident syndrome) damage to the brain done by the stroke(depending on area) can cause these symptoms...there are electrical neurons still firing in the damaged areas, therefore the body tells itself that there is something wrong and "pain"...undescribable pain is distributed in the damaged part of the brain...im no neurologist...but...depending on area you live in...she should go to UCSF medical center...they have a great neuro-sciences group(if you live on west coast),LVUMC has a good neuro division...John Hopkins medical is best on east coast...but there is the factor of money involved...there are other possibilities of what it could be...but im an infectious disease sub-specialist...id try the neurology forum
