Proximal and/or peripheral neuropathy

Doctors treating me for pain associated with proximal and/or peripeheral neuropathy because they say there is nothing else that can be done. Is there other treatment options so I can cut down on pain medication?

Are you taking purely pain medication, or one of the new meds that have been approved for neuropathy?  Lyrica is a medication that appears to be effective in many people.  However, it is expensive if you do not have insurance.  It also can cause drowsiness and dizziness.  As a last resort, you might try Zostrix cream.  It is an over-the-counter product.  The generic is less expensive.  It is to be applied 3-4 times each day.  Do not touch your eyes or mouth with the cream, accidentally, because it will burn.  Typically, it burns at the application site for approx. one week.  Then the burning usually subsides.  Some people report relief.  Be aware, though, that neuropathy may be a permanent condition that will not respond to any treatment.
